OK, I read about the first 4 pages and got bored. I have a 2016R with MIB2 NAV. Can I use any SD card? I have a quality 128GB one I currently use for backing up my files. Does it need to be reformatted? I believe I must leave the SD card in the slot for the NAV to operate but I'm not positive.

No, the SD card has to have a specific CID code that the car looks for. I wrote over the data on my original VW 16GB SD card to update mine to the 20-21 maps but can't update further because newer versions won't fit. It is possible to buy higher capacity SD cards with a custom CID. Some people on here did go that route through aliexpress.

I called a local dealer. Keep in mind I didn't tell them my VIN. Service told me service could load the file on my card for only $235 out the door, LOL. ECS Tuning only wants $186 for the card with the maps. https://www.ecstuning.com/Search/SiteSearch/5G9919866T/
VW Parts said there are only 3 in stock in the U.S. and would need to special order it. I didn't get a price from parts.

The maps (specifically the map data) must be on your card. You can download the map data from mibsolution for free. If you bought a card from wherever you choose you would need to copy that same freely available data onto your card anyway. Maybe that's what the dealer is offering to do... good money for no work, haha.

I doubt they'll be much different from the late 2021/2022 maps. If they're the 2023 or 2024 maps, that would be really nice. Is the dealer able to find the part number for the latest maps? Maybe we can do a group buy where everyone pitches $20?

If VW would let people show up/order a card and they could make that card work I'd be all for it. It would be annoying but you could just update every two or three years.
But since that's not the case... I say download the maps and do the update yourself at no cost. I'm not going to pay VW and then have to do additional work to make what I paid for work.
is that the last one? mine is 2016 and v4 how do I find the last part number for it?

Does your car have the 9.2" touchscreen? If yes then you have MIB2.5 (Discover Pro).

Also have a look at this post (and this thread) which talks about enabling the FEC for lifetime map updates. Your car may or may not have lifetime map update FEC already.
