Timing chain issues on Mk6 1.2 Tsi Golf - advice desperately needed

First time posting here, hopefully I'll be able to get some relevant advice here as it seems like the best place on the Internet for this car.

Had a 2012 MK6 Golf for about 8 years now and it's been great for most of that time. The engine started making a loud revving noise when starting, I told my usual mechanic when it was going in for a service and he told me the timing chain needed replaced. He said its not something he could do but would pass me to another guy who specialises in VW's.

After a couple of weeks I managed to get a hold of this guy and he brings the car in. He told me he had replaced the timing chain (and charged £460) but when I drove the car after picking it up it still kept losing power and misfiring. I took it back after the weekend and he said it sounded like spark plugs or coil pack could be the issue. He replaced the coil packs and all was good in the world again, driving normally and no engine lights.

Now just over a week later the loud rev on start up (particularly when starting for the first time in a while) has come back. I've also noticed a sort of rattling noise coming from the engine when idle and an engine light has come on again. Despite this it is still driving well and the Rattle dissappears when I start accelerating again. No obvious loss of power or anything.

My question(s) to the experts are, does it sound like this second mechanic has replaced the timing chain or would that cost more than he charged me? He didn't give me a docket, invoice or receipt for the £460 job. I know this was stupid on me but I was just so happy to get the car back after a month. Does it sound like this is still a timing chain issue and if so are we taking a big risk driving the car? Is there any was a total car moron like me could have a look to visually check if he has actually replaced the timing chain?

I have a feeling ill have to go back to him but I want to be well armed with the facts before I do and I hope this is where the good people of this forum can help

The rattle might just be a heat shield that is loose.

You can check the timing with a scanner like ODD11 on the GTI not sure about the regular Golf but would think you could. With a new chain there is a number that will be lower which would indicate that it has been replaced (this is with a GTI tho someone else might know more about the Golf).

Idk what that price is in US money but typically it would cost more than $800 with parts and labor here.
