At least VW saw fit to place the battery on the opposite side of the engine bay from the turbo. They also wrapped it in an insulation blanket. At least I think that's the purpose of that wrap.

2013 GTI- Mine lasted 4 years. It started cranking slower & rather than be stuck somewhere I replaced it last month with an Advanced Auto Parts Platinum AGM battery. Cranks very fast now.

When you lower a car you put the oem end links into a bind. It does shorten their life due to being put in a bind. It may also cause them to make noise. I'd replace them with some adjustable ones...

I had one until I had a rock or some such give it a whack causing it to leak. Lucky for me it was a slow leak that didn't cost me an engine. All I had to do was clean up the spill on the garage floor...

Yes It can be pretty scary when you fly into some water you never even saw. Probably some water got into something on your GTI, but now it has dried out. I'm glad you are OK now.
