As you can tell from my avatar, I'm also a fellow cone-killer. (co-driving my friend's Ford Fiesta this year--we've got KW v1 or Blistein coils on their way, and we JUST picked up a set of 7x 235/40/17 RA1's!

Super-excited to see top-shelf parts going into these lil cars--any chance these are compatible with the 2.5/non-gti chassis?

Good luck in your season!

Well I'll be interested to see when you do run the car....there is another guy who runs his semi-regularly around here(Paul Keener-Shipp, white 2011 MK6 GTI 6MT), and he is running pretty much bone stock last 2 years and pretty regularly run at the front when he is there....he probably won't run full season in DCSCC mainly because he is balancing this and riding his sportsbike on track....

What did you drive before? Were you running last couple of year?

I'll do my best to keep everything up to date on here. Thanks for the luck, and to you as well.

As for the fitment on a non-GTI, I cannot answer that. The people at Öhlins are very helpful though. Talk to Jeff or Crister at Öhlins USA (I suggest phone since they are extremely slow to answer emails). But based on other discussions on here, the spring rates of non-GTI cars seems to differ quite a bit from the GTI which probably makes the valving in these inconsistent with non-GTI cars.

I only ran last year in a 2004 BMW 330Ci, and only at DR-SCCA events. So I'll have my hands full transitioning from a throttle-steer car to a torque-steer car this year. I'm not expecting much other than to have fun.

You'll have fun, GTI is quite throttle steerable...:D Just works the opposite way....lol

I am sure with all the bits on it too it should be much more neutral than stock's nose-pushy attitude...

So today I sent my wife to the dealer to pick up the last ball joint they had in stock. They way overcharged her, so I have to go back and yell at them about it. It won't be a wasted trip though because I have to return a part anyway.

Having her pick up the ball joint allowed me to get the right strut installed. It was WAY EASIER having the drive axle and tie rod separated from the wheel bearing housing. I had to give it a thought for a while because as I was installing the strut without a spring compressor, I was thinking "jeez, that was way too easy ... but why? Well duh, it is because there was no tie rod or axle fighting you, moron!"

So, I'm still hopeful for racing this weekend. If I can finish the left side tomorrow, get the front brakes and wheels back on the car Wednesday, race alignment on Thursday, then get a tank or two of gas through it before Sunday, I should be good to go. If I don't make it, there's at least one more autocross the weekend after.

I'm accepting good thoughts, insightful wisdom, and any help I can get at this point to make this schedule.

Cheers,
Chris

The silvery portion you see as the "shaft" is actually damper body on the front...

In the process of installing the left side strut tonight, I gave this comment/picture some more thought. Now I realize why there is no bump-stops on the struts from Öhlins. It is inside.

Anyway, got the left side in tonight. It wasn't cooperating as well as the right side did last night. And then to top it all off, my T40 driver broke off in the ball joint stud. So I had to run up to Sears and get a new one (thankfully it is ultra-close). That allowed me to get the tie rod buttoned up tonight.

I started putting the brake calipers back on, but realized I need new caliper bolts that hold the caliper to the wheel bearing housing. I also need a can of brake clean. Hopefully I can pick both up tomorrow on the way home. If I can, I should be alright for my schedule of alignment on Thursday or Friday. We will see though.

I've never hated working on a car so much as a couple of times working on this bastard, and nothing is even rusted together yet. I'm starting to miss the BMW a little. You didn't need fifteen different tools to change the wheel bearing out. Oh well, that is water under the bridge now. But to top it all off, when I was putting the strut in tonight, I chipped the paint right on the corner of the wheel well. :( I think it is an easy fix though, I just need to find someone to do it.

I'm still accepting good thoughts, well wishes, and help.

All of your other mods are useful except that one.

Which one? The picture is broken if that is "the one" you were talking about.

Yeah, I haven't exactly been enjoying my wrench time on this car either. Installing the suspension was hell, even though I knew how to do it. The front struts fought us every bit of the way, coming out and going back in.

And the triple square bits are a nightmare.
