Review: Driver Gear + APR Sways

Not really. Holding them in my hand I couldn't really tell a difference. However, you're the fourth person to ask me that, am I missing something? Are people afraid of buying these because of weight? both are 27mm hollow. There isnt a big increase in weight

I mainly ask because Apr advertises "weight savings" on both front and rear bars over stock. Thanks for the response.

I already put the 24mm up for sale :( It's currently set on soft and it's pretty good that way but I'm getting a slight bit of understeer.

It was because of a post you made I believe that I decided to go with the 26/22mm combo. I just forget which one was set to soft and which to hard lol. Have to find that thread again.

I'm not tracking or even doing autox so I figured the best street setup would be what you recommended.

Yeah, the 26/22 is sublime. Well, happy trails to you good sir! (tips hat with cane) :w00t:

What tire pressure are you running front/rear?

Sticker, 38psi. Do you suggest something else?

What tires are you on?

Pirelli PZero Nero AS.

Just want to say how much I appreciate your posts and assistance sir. This isn't the first time I've referred to your expertise.

There's your problem :D

I know, I need summers and winters. It's in the mod plan, just not ready to spend the cash yet.

With the new information on the 26/22 combo being a fantastic street setup match to the DG springs, that is coming first, then the APR Intercooler. Once the intercooler is in, then I'll do summer tires and a winter setup. After that is the K04.

Somewhere between the intercooler and tires may be the BFI Stage 1 engine and trans mounts to go with the autotech insert but I'm waiting for someone else with DSG to do this to see what the NVH result is compared to just the autotech.

No problem. I'm always glad to help.
Its fun for me to help those that enjoy this as much as I do!

Try 40 psi all around. I bet your tires will wear more even, you'll have better on-center feel, and better platform.

Higher psi = less tire life? Where did you get that? I think it is the way around. With more pressure in tires, they will last longer but they will grip less. You will also get a little better mpg at the cost of grip and handling.

Try lower pressure like 36 psi for more grip and an all-around better handling.

Its all about evenly distributed pressure across the entire contact patch. 38psi is not even, it is slightly underinflated with the Pirelli PZero Nero.

40psi evens it out. Don't believe me? Go try it, but make sure you have a proper tire pressure gauge first.

Well I have different tires now. Different tires may play factor into this.

UPDATE!

SO after two full weeks of having this setup, I can make an even better conclusion. If you dont want to continue reading here's the simple answer: Buy this setup. If you dont buy it, you are missing out on some SERIOUS potential that your car has unlocked. Ride quality and performance are so equally balanced, that I'm surprised the engineers didnt dive into this setup more, or maybe they did but the Americans were Screwed by the DOT curb hieght requirements.

Let me say this. I've had one of the stiffest setups that you can on this car (Neuspeed/Bilstein) The performance was great, but you had to trade off the ride quality. Roads here in Alabama are TERRIBLE, as I've stated many times before. I needed a setup that would not rattle my brains loose driving through the city on my way to work.

I then went with coilovers since that was the "mainstream" route of most Vdubbers. Without any consideration or dynamic research of any sort of engineering principles, I took the dive and was happy for about two weeks. I had to live with this system for 5 months!!!!!!!!! Not only did it suck ride quality-wise, but the performance was just mushy compared to the Neuspeed/Bilstein. I missed having one or the other.

Finally, I said screw it and took the dive with the APR Front Sway in addition to my rear sway and the Driver Gear springs. Let's just say, holy shit. Holy Shit. Holy shit. The car still feels amazing today as it did when I first took it off the lift. It still corners like nobody's business and the turn in is AMAZING.

It stays very neutral in the corners and has so much control that even at the apex of a turn you have enough control to do anything you want. Lane changes are quick and direct, low speed maneuvering doesnt feel like such a task and it doesnt feel like a sloshing pig. Chassis flex is all but eliminated, or at least balanced enough to not feel like a pig in the turns. My B-Pillar creak is gone due to this fact.

I managed to take some turns at a high velocity and still never broke traction on these crappy tires I'm on right now. I cant wait for the Hankooks to go on tomorrow!

Overall, I'm very very very very very very very happy with my choice, and I can finally settle down and focus on other portions of my car.

You are terrible, grambles. You are making me spend my money ! BANHAMMER!

Jokes aside, that's great that you're enjoying your set-up. It really makes me excited to get all these parts eventually for my car so I can tackle some of the twisties here and eventually the track.

I'm probably not proficient enough to install the springs myself, but would a noobie be okay installing the sways if you lift it up a bit?

Haha, my apologies, but I definitely advocate what I feel is a majority concensus of what people want around here. Breaking the norm of the low and stanced crowd is not my thing, but I definitely take an engineering apporach to modifying my car and have done the other options to justify my purchases.

I would go low and stanced on air if I had to time and money to make a show car, but at the end of the day, its just a car that I drive to and fro from work.

As for your question regarding install, I did my coil install on jack stands and with a floor jack. Totally doable, but you have to make sure you know what you're going to do to it when you start the process. Research it up and find all the tools you need, so that way, you can be ready to tackle anything you need.

PM me if you want some detail on the install.
