Suspension upgrade install questions

ErsteGTI

Ready to race!
I am upgrading my suspension with new DG springs, Koni Yellows and APR sways. :happyanim:

Few questions though:

• Shop want to charge 4.5 hrs for sways (all front, I’m sure) and 2.5 for springs/struts/shocks. Is that too much? Seems like a lot ($700)?

• Are there any bolts/parts that should be replaced when installing the Koni Yellows?

• Are there any bolts/parts that should be replaced when installing the sways? My shop wants to drop the subframe to install the front sway.

• Are people generally upgrading the Endlinks when installing new sways?

Thanks for your input.

I realize some of this information is scattered throughout numerous threads about suspension. I am trying to get it consolidated to one thread for easy reference.

Please add other information that may be useful (e.g. Modshack’s tip about indexing your camber prior to dropping your subframe, etc.)

springs seems reasonable, sways is not. you could probably do the rear with a buddy or something, but front i could see paying a shop if you are not able (like me!) as that is more involved, but 4.5hrs seems high for those two.

the subframe drop for the fsb is the most labor intensive. prolly where the $ is going

I could see 4.5 Hours for all of it...What is a sway bar install when your pulling all the springs/ struts out? Maybe another hour total on a lift.

Get new bolts, nuts and strut mounts (preferably TT/RS3 ones).
Change sway bar links if they already have some mileage.

lower control arm bushing Audi S3 and RS3:

1K0 199 231 N left
1K0 199 232 N right

strut mount Audi TT and RS3 + bearings:

8J0 412 331 - mount - 2 needed
6N0 412 249 D - bearing - 2 needed - or SKF VKD 35025 T (possibly even better)
N 910 216 01 - nut - 2 needed
N 101 277 07- bolt - 6 needed

Thanks. I bought the all the hardware listed by Dan for the DG springs. So, would that mean I just need rear shock upper bolts? N90648402?

Also, do you have a part number for the TT/RS3 strut mounts?

Thanks all for the feedback on pricing. Yeah, I'll talk to the shop for better pricing, I guess.

Is there a difference between our upper strut mounts and the TT/RS3 strut mounts?

I saw your thread on MkV UK forum. Is this the part number for the RS3 strut mount:

8J0 412 331 - Federbeinlagerung - 2 Stück - € 24.10 - strut mount
6N0 412 249 C - Axialrillenkugellager - 2 Stück - € 14.82 - bearing
N 910 216 01 - Sechskantbundmutter - 2 Stück - je € 1.37 - nut
N 101 277 07- Sechskantbundschraube - 6 Stück - je 69 Cent - bolt

Is it a straight swap with the Mk6 GTI mount?

Also, can you also comment on how much of a difference this mount makes? Is it for performance or maintenance? Both?

Thanks for your help

Agreed, Same here. I'm curious in getting more info on this for when I upgrade my suspension.

So does anyone have experience with RS3/TT front strut mounts?

They are about 2-3 times the cost of GTI OEM mounts and I'm looking to order the last parts/hardware before installing new suspension/sways soon.

Pardon me for being that late, mates. :wosschilder980:

1.
The control arm rear mounts and bushes are well know as they come with the
S3 alloy control arms are also sold separately. They are solid rubber instead of
the voided rubber which is prone to failure and weakens steering feel. You'll get
a better steering feel with the Audi S3/RS ones. They fit 1:1 all Mk.V and Mk.VI
Golf/GTI/A3 and the likes (but not Jetta/GLI Mk.VI).

lower control arm bushing Audi S3 and RS3:

1K0 199 231 N left
1K0 199 232 N right

2.
Similar thing with the strut mounts. The Golf/GTI/A3/Jetta comes with soft rubber
while the sportier and more expensive cousins Audi TT and RS3 come with a stiffer
rubber strut mount. To be more precise it's about 30 % stiffer which also improves
steering feel while retaining near stock ride comfort and without increase in NVH.

strut mount Audi TT and RS3 + bearings:

8J0 412 331 - mount - 2 needed
6N0 412 249 D - bearing - 2 needed
or SKF VKD 35025 T (quite possibly even better)
N 910 216 01 - nut - 2 needed
N 101 277 07- bolt - 6 needed

I highly recommend both whenever you upgrade your suspension !!:thumbsup:
