"Phone Wire" by rear view

Found this wire the other day, I picked up the car last week (used) not sure what this would have been. its coming out in the center of the upper instrument panel. not sure if you can tell from the pic, but it looks like a phone jack and the wire comes down about 6-8 inches

Interesting, I though those were standard in the R. I really dont know too many details on the R, its a car I never though I would own. I though I was going to be a life long GTI guy.
