Best Spy Shots >> Volkswagen unveiled a concept of the Golf R Cabriolet at GTI-Wörthersee in Austria– and we now have shots of the real car testing at the Nürburgring. Designed to demonstrate the "inexhaustible potential of the Golf," the convertible will be distinguished by an aggressive front fascia, aerodynamic side skirts and a center-mounted dual exhaust system (which is not mounted on this prototype yet).
2013 Volkswagen Golf R Cabriolet
The sport-tuned R, which goes on sale in early 2012, is the most powerful Golf ever sold in the U.S. As Volkswagen’s flagship performance car, it’s fitted with a high-output 256-bhp version of the company’s turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, mated exclusively to a 6-speed manual transmission. That drive reaches all four wheels via a Haldex center differential. Available in 3-door and 5-door configurations, the new Golf R weighs 3415 lb. and will hit 60 mph in less than 6 seconds. Top speed is limited to 130. We like the car’s motorsports look, highlighted by a gloss-black radiator, LED running lights and gloss-black calipers for the larger brakes. In back, a center-mount chrome tip exhaust and a diffuser will be shown to lots of slower cars…

Other modifications include a sport-tuned suspension, a high-performance braking system and 19-inch alloy wheels. Volkswagen says the cabin has “Nappa leather sport seats, piano black trim and carbon fibre accents.” Like the standard all-wheel-drive Golf R, power is provided by a turbocharged 2.0 liter engine that develops 270 hp and 350 Nm of torque. It enables the convertible to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in "less than six seconds" and hit a top speed of 250 km/h.
