Official Sway Bar Discussion Thread

Only says:

Adjustable from +90%, 135% and 200% increase in stiffness over stock.

Which would mean 113-178 N/mm depending on setting. Which setting did you use to calculate 122 N/mm for the 24mm bar?

122 N/mm is the theoretical 'medium setting' while 109 and 139 N/mm are the real settings.

This is the sway bar stiffness in N/mm.

short arm vs. long arm

....
....

- stock rear sway bar Mk.V/VI GTI, dia 21,7 x 3 mm - tube:

c = 59,5 N/mm

- H&R rear sway bar, diameter. 24 mm - solid:

c = 122,7 N/mm center (~ 109 N/mm long and 139 N/mm short arm)

Obviously the rear H&R doubles the torsional resistance, ....

The question is if the Hotchkis values are related to the stock GTI rear sway
or to the softer stock Golf/Rabbit rear sway bar.

Nevertheless I wouldn't fit a rear sway only. I'd always do both. If fitting rear
only a 22 or 23 mm solid bar would be the better choice.

don't know if this is too off topic but how will adding something like a Unibrace UB affect the suspension feel? Would it act like sway bars?

As in they're too soft or they're too stiff?

the latter. my 24mm on my GTI, set to stiff, was way too much for me on the streets.

I quite understand. :D

THX, crabb45.

EDIT:
I figured out H&R makes these yellow bars for the Chinese market.
Possibly some of us are jealous of these colored sways.

Fortunately it can be set to soft for the street and bumped back to stiff at the track.

We probably have different tolerances for stiffness too. 20 years of racing karts with no suspension at all besides the flex in the tire sidewalls and the flex in the frame tends to make one more tolerant of a stiff suspension

The question, unfortunately, still remains as to which car the Hotchkis quoted stiffness increase over "stock" is actually being compared. They list:

10-11 Volkswagen Jetta TDI
09-12 Volkswagen Jetta MKVI
09-12 Volkswagen GTI MKVI
09-10 Volkswagen Golf MKVI
06-08 Volkswagen Jetta MKV
06-08 Volkswagen GTI MKV
06-08 Volkswagen Golf MKV
06-08 Audi A3

Indeed. Ask Hotchkis?

(A3 sways are way softer than GTI's while I presume the A3 S-Line comes with stiffer springs)

My APR sway is squeaking like no other. Can anyone tell me how to re-grease using the zerk fitting?

You need a grease gun and use it twice a year.

Thanks !!

Confusing answer though as there are no solid sways from factory except on Sharan and R36.
