GTI stalling on startup? CEL on

1. get vagcom, it'll tell you why you're getting the CEL
2. looks like you're getting multiple misfires - your coil packs are probably bad. Vagcom would tell you which cylinders are misfiring.
3. press down on your coil packs, make sure there is a good connection. try and see what happens.
4. go to the dealer to get them replaced

Having this exact issue... I guess since it's on youtube Im not the only one... Anyone had this fixed? Is it safe to run for lets say a 600 km trip?

Thanks in advance for your input!

Sounds like a misfire. Pretty common problem with these engines, but it's a simple fix. Try upgraded coil packs first and then spark plugs if necessary.

Coil packs: http://www.hstuning.com/product_info.php?cPath=24_32&products_id=3691&vpath=33_289

Might want to carry an extra coil pack in your car so you don't get stranded on the side of the road if it happens again. Takes 5 minutes to swap 'em out with no tools needed.

I get this sometimes. Especially on a warm engine. (Example: I get up in the morning, drive to the 7-11 a couple blocks away, get a 5hr energy or coffee, get back in, and it'll do this)

Been doing it since I took delivery. Only issue is I never get a CEL for it. Otherwise I could finally figure out why it does this. Kind of sucks to have a new car choke to turn over.

Hey,

Have you had the problem fixed? I have the same problem with my 2011 DSG and dealer (park avenue VW in south shore , mtl) was never able to figure it out...

They did an ECU upgrade and for a while the problem was fine but it just came back when the weather started warming up in Montreal.

Are you driving a 2013 or at least still in warranty, call the dealer let him decided if you can drive or let him send a roll back...................

anyone find out whats the problem with this?

That is my car in the video btw. This seems to affect MY2011 mostly if not exclusively. This problem is worst for me in the summertime. Nearly every time I go to start the engine after its been sitting for an hour.

AND, have you taken it to a dealer to be fixed?

5 trips. 3 trips specifically for this issue. Opened case with vwoa at the time of the third trip. They found nothing wrong with the car. they blamed the issue on fuel quality. I was advised to no longer use shell or chevron and to use exxon. The issue was worst with shell fuel, but still occur with the other fuel companies. I always use top tier fuel, never the cheap stuff. My opinion was that vw was trying to pass the buck.

Had the exact same issue for a while. Mine actually got to the point where it threw a CEL and took a few cranks to start. Took it to the dealer and after 5 hours, they replaced the HPFP due to low pressure. Not sure if that really fixed it though as it's happened intermittently since then :mad0259:

Such nonsense, used all brand of gas in many different cars with no issues related to fuel. They're making excuses. Get them to buy back the car and run far far away.

VW has gone down the toilet.

ive been tracking this issue for a while now, some other threads about it:

someone managed to make it happen before dealership's eyes. they said it was fuel pressure problem. never got an update after that so I assume it was fixed? cuz ppl dont post if they got no problems.

The dealership told me they checked the entire fuel system on my gti and found all pressures good for what it's worth. Who knows for sure. They drain my tank because the vw tech line diagnosed the problem as bad fuel. That didn't solve the issue, big surprise.

they wont find anything by just checking the fuel system. from all similar cases i've read almost all cars had this happen after a short period of drive, then parked for a short time (any where between 5 min to couple of hours), under the warm whether.

they need to be checking the fuel system under those conditions, which still doesn't guarantee the issue will replicate itself, but its somewhere to start i think.

one thing for sure is, it never happens at the first start up of the day. (at least not yet...)
