I was curious if anyone knew any tricks to getting CEL codes or diagnostic info to display without any tools? I just bought a 2012 GTI, only had it about a month. So obviously don't need it yet, but would be nice to know just in case. 
I had a 94 Cadillac Eldorado before this car and if you held two buttons on the dash it would enter diagnostic mode and would flash engine codes across the dash and allow you to run all kinds of checks. It was nice to be able to know the codes and have at least an idea of what was going on, instead of going into a dealer blind
Also, does anyone use any of the iPhone or android apps to hook up to the ODB port? That seems to accomplish the same thing. I've seen a few, some wired and some wireless. Thoughts on those, if anyone uses them?
