I can understand that train of thought... I once subscribed to it. I never understood why people would a) spend so much money, and b) risk their warranty's "modifying" an otherwise already-awesome car.

That was back when all I knew about my car was how to drive it. I found the forums (back then, vortex for my MKIV) because I wanted to look up a DIY to change my oil. That eventually led to more and more advanced DIY's, through full suspension refreshes, replacement axles, etc. I started building up a toolkit, and took pleasure in spending the money I would have paid in labor on tools and quality parts instead. I began to take pride knowing the work was done well, properly, and by myself.

That MKIV was my baby until the day I traded her in for my 2011 MKVI GTI.

Then I got bored. 3 years scheduled maintenance and a warranty left me nothing to do with all my new tools -- and driving quickly got boring, though I loved my car.

Throwing caution to the wind, I got bit by the mod bug, and haven't looked back.

My car is no longer a utility I have to maintain, it's a hobby and a passion .

YOU wouldn't. Others feel differently. Performance, aethetics, and personalization are strong motivators.

VW didn't get the best out of the engine that is why.

We are able to get your 160hp car up to 220hp and 240ft/lbs of torque over the stock 177.

That is 60hp and 60+ ft/lbs gain that vw left on the table.

This is why people modify them.

Why make more than one brand or model of car?

Would you wear the same clothing as everyone else? This is how we feel about our cars. Its just a sense of individuality. I love my VW but I also what it to look a certain way too. If it was parked with 20 other VW's that looked just like mine I wanna be able to say "Thats mine over there!" lol. Everyone is different so I guess its just how that person is...

It depends on the mods and the car for me.
I get some of it: I would go stage 1 and a nice (maybe Borla) exhaust on my car were it not for the idea that I don't want to risk voiding my warranty, and I can't justify removing a perfectly good exhaust system (it sounds good - and obviously isn't rusting out yet) and going for the large chunk of change to replace it just to get a marginal - if any performance gain.
Basically a couple of hundred dollars for better sound.

Still, depending on how and where owners drive, and the money they have to spend I get chipping, exhaust, and possibly mild spring/shock changes.

Mods I don't get:
Lowering a car to detrimental/crippling levels that actually hurt the cars real world on road performance.
The automotive equivalent of sagging your jeans.
Cosmetic mods that remove the GTIs signatures - such as its grill stripes and Detroits.
These mods make my eyes struggle to tell if the car is a GTI or a Golf.
