Random starting issue 1.4 TSI

Hello all, new to the forums so I thought i'd share this with the hope somebody can point me in the right direction. Every now and then I come across an issue starting my Golf where it will eventually turn over and suddenly die, sometimes it takes a few tries before i can successfully start the car. I managed to record a video of one of the times I had noticed it, any ideas on what could be causing it?

I had a similar thing happen with my GTI after having it mapped, took it back to the tuners and straight away they said it was low fuel pressure, they fitted a new fuel filter and it fixed it, (there's a pressure regulator inside the filter), not sure if your filter would be the same though! Cheap part so worth a go!

Thanks for the advice everyone. I have a VW specialist a few mins away and have thought about having a diagnostic done at some point so it's an option. In relation to the fault I actually had changed the fuel filter some time ago, ever since then I have started to notice this issue. Could it be that I had done something wrong when changing the filter originally?

They are available in different Bar (pressure) ratings, it's possible you got the wrong one, or maybe installed it backwards, probably not though!

Is this possible cause if i have hahaha. Well I looked into it when I replaced the old one when I got the car, the original was 6.4 bar but everywhere was saying to buy the revised 6.6 bar version. 1K0201051K was the one I bought

I don't really know much about this other than my limited previous experience with it, but I'm sure the pressure rating should be the same as the one fitted from factory, you need to find out which one is correct and then fit a new one and hope for the best.

Ready to race!
Unless its running very rough when it does eventually start - it won't be the chain. Skipping a single tooth will result in it running like a bag of spanners. more than one tooth and there will be valve/piston damage.

More likely causes:

-Immobiliser issues
-Camshaft position sensor (wiring or sensor)
-Crankshaft position sensor (wiring or sensor)
-High pressure fuel pump / follower
-Low pressure fuel pump
-Fuel filter

If you haven't done so already, try using your spare key.

Here is a video I took at the time my car was doing the same as yours, they are near identical, mine would also do it multiple times occasionally, I would bet if you changed the filter it would fix it,

Second this. The first time around, dealer replaced my fuel filter with the old revision which is rated to 6 bar. Never had a problem with that but for peace of mind, they replaced it with the latest revision rated at 6.4 bar.

Hi all. Changed the fuel filter as advised, all fine for a few days until this morning when about to drive to Heathrow and I got this.

Now its not the fuel filter as I have now changed this twice since I had the car, and I have connected it correctly. Somebody did mention the immobilizer which would be a thought... I have noticed sometimes when going for a drive and I put the key in sometimes it don't turn normally have to use a little force then all is fine start the car etc.

I would check the in tank fuel pump next, Check the fuel pump in the tank by lifting the rear seat base, it could well be faulty, also the electronic part located in the black pump cover can overheat and cause problems, ( you can diagnose this by feeling if it’s hot ),

This video should be of help,

Thanks again for your advice, I am popping the car into my local VW specialist tomorrow. They will run a diagnostics check on the car, and I will show the video I took too. Hopefully its something simple and not something costly.
