Headlight Washers

I have a new topic that's been bugging me for a while now and I keep forgetting to bring it up.

Does anyone know of a tested/repeatable way to get the headlight washers to pop up and wash the headlights?

At this point i think they are like big-foot or something, keep remembering that they exist when i see the little squares in front of the headlights but i am yet to see them in action. going on a year with the car, never seen them work.

My R isn't the Nav one, idk if that makes a difference, but i thought i saw the headlight washers when i was under the car.

Regards,

I'm fairly certain North American cars did not get the headlight washers. The bumpers still have the cutouts for them, but there's nothing functional behind.

if this is true i want to cry, or burn VAG to the ground, or both. 40k car and no washers...shame.

It should work like this:

Headlights need to be ON (will not "wash" if they are OFF, so it doesn't waste fluid while you don't need them)

The FIRST time you pull the wiper stalk for more than a moment the headlight washers will come up. After that, it works every other fifth time I believe because otherwise you would be wasting tons of fluid at night. I guess they figured "every fifth time" was good enough to keep the headlights clear.

If you were to turn off your headlights and turn them back on again I believe it would reset the process and start the "first" time again.

My car is North American, and my washers pop up regularly.

Try it, let us know!

No, NA cars never got headlight washer so I'm not sure where you get your car, but I see you are in UK tho...

He said it so I don't have to!

My R has them (its a NA golf R). Lights on every 5th after the first.

I'm in the UK cause I'm stationed here. My Golf R is 100% from the US of A and has headlight washers like the posts above this one.

What the? Most of us disable it with vagcom because it is an annoying feature. If you got a used R maybe you need to re-enable it. Not sure why you would because it's almost useless and creates a mess but it's your car. Btw- every 3rd press of the wipers should activate it.

@theunholy i only say 40k car since a friend of mine bought her R (also a '13 also non Nav) for 38k from the dealer. I got mine for 21, but still expensive car should come with at least the appropriate bells/whistles.

I'll give it a go when i leave the office today as the car is already dirty and whatnot. But legitimately i have yet to see them work and have pressed and held the washer stock for ~5-7 seconds on multiple occasions while the headlights were on.

Thank you everyone for the suggestions.

On a side note, it was used when i got it (15k on the odo) and I'm not sure what the 1st owner did, how would i check if it really was disabled?

You have to get a vagcom cable and find the check box for it. I Don't have time to dig up the process for you but it is posted somewhere on here and on vortex somewhere.

Also, it doesn't matter how long you hold the stalk down, what activates it is the number of times you press the stalk down.

heh.

Like previously mentioned, every 3rd pull back on washer stalk will activate them. Obviously they're a lot harder to notice at hwy speeds than parked.:D
