1998 Toyota Camry, and no it doesn't really compare in any category except gas mileage and cargo space. But I figure I make enough now that I can make a car payment and finally drive something I like...

2007 Impreza WRX to a 2011 Golf TDI.

The WRX had some simple bolt-ons as well as an upgraded suspension. The torque/power were addicting given that there was NO wheel spin- you just hooked up and went. The sound of the UELH's on the boxer was so addicting as well. Surprisingly, the interior wasn't that bad- nice, soft-touch dash, great seat fabric (read: no fraying like my d*mn Golf TDI), plenty of space, etc. It was equally enjoyable in inclimate weather. Always ran a good set of all-seasons and never once got stuck or put in any hairy situations.

Where the Golf TDI accels is in more comfort, a more usable interior/hatch area, oh and did I mention a running average of 44mpg compared to the 25 of the WRX? Couple that with near equal handling capabilities (no joke) with a much more compliant ride that my wife appreciates, along with a MUCH better shifting transmission (WRX was utter rubbish), and the Golf TDI is just a much more "livable" option for me. I would have loved to get into a GTI, but with negligibly better mileage than the WRX (I drive about 30,000 miles/year), I figured I'd go big or go home in terms of efficiency.

Things I miss about Subaru: ridiculously easy to maintain/get parts for (on the cheap), tank-like solidity from the chassis (read: the WRX also rattled A LOT more), AWD and not needing snow tires to maneuver safely/start from a stop in STL snow, and just the simplicity of the entire car. I enjoy the bells and whistles of the Golf TDI, but once reality set in, that is just that many more things to go wrong but I guess that is the trade off.

Well I've only had my GTI for a few days, but here goes.

I had a 1997 Honda CIvic DX before the GTI. Made the upgrade because I finished college/got my first real, full time job and the tranny on my Honda was done. Loved the Civic, autox'd it with a semi tuned/built suspension set up. I'll always be fond of the Civic, it looked great, got 34-44 mpg, was fun to drive and cheap.

I, like most, was torn between an MS3 and GTI. I went back and forth a lot, but eventually chose GTI because of the nicer looks/interior and the fact that, although being slower, I would say it is a better all around performer and easy to live with. So far, I'm loving it, seems really sturdy, extremely luxurious and definitely draws stares from other drivers. It also handles better than my suspension modded Honda and rides nicer than many stock cars, kind of a great middle ground between comfort and performance. I can't wait to autox it!

I went from this

to this

Although I like the GTI a lot, Audi's are still my favorite. I had a B7 before and it's probably my favorite body style. Lease ran out on the B8 and payments were too much anyway. I wanted to go CPO B7 again but the price for the GTI was just better. I will definitely miss the quattro in a few months.

My last car was a 2009 STI:

Now in a 2011 GTI:

I appreciate both cars for what they offer. The STI was a hell of a lot of fun. No wheelspin even with over 300 hp, and it's amazing how AWD and LSDs in the front and rear could just launch you out of corners. Great brakes as well. Looking purely at performance, it's hard to beat.

The GTI is more refined for everyday use. The interior is a class or two higher, and it's quieter. The DSG transmission is a gem and the fuel economy is obviously better. Also, the GTI feels more tossable/nimble in everyday driving due to the heavier-weighted steering and shorter overall length. I miss the STI, but love the GTI as an everyday car.

2007 Charger SRT8 (Super Bee) to 2010 GTI (Autobahn)...miss the power, but love the gas mileage, not to mention the interior is incredibly better...

Wow interesting. Some of you came from current gen STIs, I don't think i'd do that trade for any reason but efficiency.

I had a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee as a daily for about a year that I inherited. It was faster than the current TDI and also much quieter on the freeway, and it absorbed bumps way better.

It also had better options like memory seats and a garage door opener etc built in and a better stereo.
But ... it got 15.5mpg average so it had to go and with 120k miles it started to have a few dreaded problems.

my 2011 TDI on the other hand is way better packaged, and get far better fuel economy. Not to mention it handles rock solid.

My other car is a C5 Corvette coupe with Z06 suspension parts and a few other mods...

Had a 2008 VW rabbit...now a 2 door CSG gti with tech and 18's. It is night and day difference. I really likes the rabbit but it cannot compare to the GTI.
