Electrical crisis

I've been having electrical problems with my 2010 GTI for months. It began with occasional flickering of my R replica LED tail lights, which worked perfectly for months. Sometimes they'd work perfectly fine, but most of the time, I'd have to drive around with half the LEDs on with many of them flickering. I checked my fuses and my battery, all of which are fine.

I later installed an interior LED kit from Blast LED. The passenger footwell started flickering after a few weeks, and I tried putting a new one in that I know works, but it didn't change. A few weeks later, one of the roof LED bulbs started flickering.

I also have Spyder MK7 style LED headlights, where the drivers DRL sometimes goes out, but wiggling the cable/harness causes t to come back on. I could not figure out exactly what's loose, if anything.

Last week or so, my horn went out. The button on the steering wheel doesn't work, or when I lock the car with the key.

I just finished replacing my CECM which a specialist said might be the issue, and nothing has been fixed.

It could be that all of these parts have failed individually, but I find that very hard to imagine.

What could be going on here? I'm beyond frustrated and I'm very close to getting rid of this car, which I otherwise love.

Perhaps take it to an audio or interior specialist that deals with electronics all the time.
Also if you take it to a electrical specialist then they could perhaps check the rear taillight wiring to see if it's getting the right flow/current and power ....just a thought that there may be a loose ancillary cable somewhere near the battery/engine bay

Hi, I'm brand new to the forum and haven't gotten to know the mk6 well yet, but do the lights flicker when parked, or only when moving? Flickering often means a short, and since you have plenty of aftermarket electrical components you have increased the chance for bad wiring.

Sounds as if you have a bad earth maybe! Check the battery connections and the body earth strap in the engine bay as well as any other earth points you can find near the affected components.

Update: I bought new Depo tails and have been working perfectly so far. For anyone thinking about buying aftermarket LEDs for their MK6, I STRONGLY advise against buying low quality stuff; you might end up paying a lot more as a result. Dealer fixed the horn - not sure what the problem was. No problems with the headlights either (guessing they were somehow related to the horn). Thanks everyone

In many of my posts I've always warned against buying cheap replica tails ever since I had trouble with a set after only a few weeks of ownership, I replaced them with genuine hella tails and have not had an issue since! I also had similar problems with ed's headlights which I replaced with genuine and again no further issues, the (cheap) replica stuff is certainly best avoided! Glad you got to the bottom of it without too much hassle!

There are plenty of things that shopping for a bargain makes sense with. Electronics and tires are two things that I never pinch pennies on.

I agree 100%.

high quality parts are a must and aftermarket electronics can cause alot of probs, this car has the wackiest electrical system. It tries to guess whats going on and what it should do based on the resistance of the circuit. Which means if somethings changing the draw or resistance even the minutest bit, as in a non OEM light that draws 1% more current, youll get bulb out errors, flickering, all kinds of phantom stuff. on mine if you tell both windows to auto roll down at the same time and flick on the AC while theyre rolling down theyll just stop lol
I had all kinds of gremlins when I first picked it up even with OEM hardware

Nope! This doesn't happen on mine, just tried it.
