Not so fast: VW rethinking U.S.-spec Golf R
04/09/2010, 3:32 PM
By Drew Johnson

Reports surfaced late last year that Volkswagen executives had given the green light to a U.S. version of the Golf R, but it appears as though the German automaker may be having a change of heart. VW is said to be reconsidering the U.S.-spec Golf R due to an unfavorable dollar to euro exchange rate.

Speaking with The New York Times at the recent New York Auto Show, VW spokesman Steve Keyes revealed the U.S.-spec Golf R is still up in the air. Keyes added: Wed love to have it, but its a question now of euros versus dollars.

Essentially a higher-performance version of the Golf GTI, the new Golf R would replace the former Golf R32 in the U.S. market. The golf R is currently sold in the European market, boasting all-wheel drive and 270 horsepower making it the most powerful Golf ever.

The Golf Rs sell point could also be a concern for VW as its higher price tag could substantially limit sales here in the U.S. Although the Golf R is capable of 0-60 blasts in 5.5 seconds, it remains to be seen if U.S. buyers would be willing to shell out a significant premium over the already potent Golf GTI model.
It's hard to say if we'd shell out for the 'premium' as there has never been a hint to the actual price range...

Hey guys! i just finished reading the GOLF R article from European Magazine pg 36-38.

Im not sure but it sounds like the Golf r will come to the U.S 2nd quarter of 2011. Don't quote me on this, but it seems like it's coming in the U.S.

I'll quote the last paragraph from EM pge 38.
"It will come, however reluctantly the business-case on both sides of the ocean wring their Underloss. It would be a limited-issue edition of 3,000 cars max starting at $32,500 or so for a manual-equipped two-door."

It won't the dollar is weak and VW won't risk it on a weak exchange rate. The economy would have to EXPLODE in the U.S. only in the next 6 months.

OK, I won't quote you because you have no more reliable info than anyone else on here.

All we can do is wait for a decision from VW.

That link is from 10/7/2009, and no, VW still has not confirmed that it is coming to US.

Spoke with a friend today who's a sales guy. Says every event they go to for VW he's up their asses about this car. And all they say is... "we haven't made up our mind yet," possible in late 2011 maybe.
Can't believe VW won't admit it even in limited numbers. In the mean time I'm buying one of these engines and placing it in my Bug! http://www.aircooledtechnology.com/ I may just go back to old School. Like I did when I began. Cheap, fast, fun and easy to work on too!

Where I began:
Keep in mind this was in the '70's
Muscle cars couldn't keep pace with me. I should have never sold it!

This may have already been said elsewhere, but the Euro has been weakening over the past few months, so at last now the business case is stronger for selling the GTI-R in the states. Fingers crossed.

Check out this article if what it says proves to be true, I don't blame VW for their hesitation with activating pricier models in the US.
