iPhone 3GS w/ iOS4 and MDI

I just purchased a 2010 CC R-Line with the RCD-510 and 9W3 and the MDI

I fully understand that my streaming BT will not work without the 9W7.

But why does the MDI not work with my iPhone 3GS?
My iPhone will charge, but the RCD-510 will not take control of the iPod functions...

I borrowed a friends 8G iPod nano and it worked w/o any issues, so I am fairly sure the MDI cable is fine and the interface works in general.

Do I need to upgrade the MDI? I have seen some people using the USB MDI cable and a usb flash drive (usb key) to upgrade their MDI...

This is so frustrating! I love my CC but I hate not having access to my iPod music on my iPhone!

I have tried to power down the iPhone and connect it to the MDI with the car off. Then turn on the car, then turn on the iPhone. Same result, no iPod access!

Please could someone help? TIA!!

ic you have the 2010 GTI which I believe has the 9W2 bluetooth module which does support streaming bluetooth audio.

Streaming Bluetooth only works with the 9W2 bluetooth module.

The CC I just purchased has a 9W3 which supports voice commands and other phone functions (like the contacts and what not...)

The new 9W7 bluetooth module supports both streaming and voice commands but it's around $500 + needs some programming of the car.

At $500 thats darn close to the price of a new touch HU!

Also tested a iTouch w/ iOS4 installed and it works. I also tested a iPhone 3G with
v3.1.3 and it works too...

So anyone here connected their 3GS with iOS4 to their MDI?

Yah I am fully aware that the 9W7 will allow Bluetooth streaming. But the 9W7 isn't really available in the US at this time so it's kind of a dead end for me....

The module is available from VW, although it'll take about 2 weeks to get there, worth the wait imo.

$500 for streaming bluetooth audio? I am not convinced that is worth it. Have connected your 3GS w/ iOS4 to your MDI? Do you have an MDI?

Yes I know:
9W2 = bluetooth streaming - weak phone interface
9W3 = no bluetooth streaming - good phone interface (voice dialing)
9W7 = bluetooth streaming - good phone interface

I am 99% sure my 2010 CC R-Line has a 9W3 installed since I can activate Bluetooth streaming on my RCD-510 but can't select it in the Media interface.

Thus I am left with using my MDI with it's iPod interface. My previous car was a 03 Corolla S that I installed an After-Market Kenwood MP3 CD player with a USB iPod interface. My iPhone worked great with it even after my iOS4 upgrade.

Now with my CC I have no way of using my iPhone to play music.. Just make and receive calls.

So has anyone connected a 3GS with iOS4 installed to their MDI iPod interface?

Yes, I have a 3GS and I have the new iOS4 installed, and when I connected to the MDI iPod interface, I could not control the phone with it either. If I disconnected it, then selected the song I wanted, and then connected it again, it would play that song, and afterwards play the next track and so on, but I could not do anything else.

It didn't bother me so much because it is primarily my wife's car and she has a Nano in there with a 1000 songs or so on it and it works perfectly.

The cheapest solution is get a used Nano or Ipod Classic off eBay and roll with that.

Yah it sucks that I have Apples most advanced iPod/phone ever and I have to look to used eBay stuff for my brand new CC... Wish I could revert to V3.1.3! Any one else have any better suggestions?

I restored my iPhone to factory defaults and synched 2 CDs with no success...

Well as a final test I connected one of my co-worker's 3GS w/ iOS4 to my MDI and bingo it worked! Oh well looks like I'll have to upgrade to iPhone 4 so I get a working iPhone for my new CC! :-) Thats ok...

My wife is excited to get my used 3GS so it's all good!

My belief is that the MDI is looking for something that is fouled up in my iPhone. My best guess is pin 21 of the iPod Universal Dock interface... Who knows!

Thanks for everyone who replied!

Try restoring your phone in itunes. Sometimes something goes wrong during an upgrade. I have used an iPhone 3g and an iphone 4 with ios4 and they both work fine.
