I was going to say, it's pretty easy to make spacers for the springs or strut mounts. In reality, you should probably just drive slower over those obstacles. I can tell you 16's will fit (on a GTI), you can a get slightly taller series tire and then adjust the speedo with vcds.

Minimum rim size for the R is 17" because of the massive front brakes. I have 17" tires for the winter and the ride quality is better than on the stock 19's
