Deciding between Golf and GTI

OP they must have really made mpg improvements to the 2011 Mazda 3 because I had the 2010 2.5 and the mileage was really bad. I never broke 21.5 city/hwy combined whereas I get 27 combined in the GTI with a far superior car. Maybe the newer zoo zooms are nicer but the GTI felt like a huge upgrade to me over the Mazda.

GTI, all the way across the sky....

But really, Kawika, the guy that puts together the SoCal Last Sunday drives, has a bagged TDI and is a crazy bullet in that thing. I push to my driving limits in my GTI and still can't keep up in the canyons with him. The TDI is certainly a very capable car. Just some perspective for you.

If it's for mpg reasons, not a huge difference and for the driving pleasure, you will enjoy the gti much much more.
In my mk6 Jetta tdi I would get 800 km's/tank, the gti is 600, due to the cost of diesel being a little higher, the fillup costs were very similar. To offset the lower mpg with the gti, I work from home 1 day a week, my daily commute is 130km's.
