When I bought my 2012 Golf in mid 2011, $1500 under invoice was doable for both the Golf 2.5 and GTI. I've seen a couple threads recently where people got close to $3k under invoice.

So it's possible to do much better than the numbers you posted above.

I decided to forgo the new purchase. Picked up a 2008 4-door DSG with sunroof yesterday for $18400 at a dealer in RI. It has 27k miles and certified pre-owned, so a 2-year/24k warranty will start in two months when the original warranty lapses.

I'm happy with my decision. Can't wait to pick it up this week.
