2012 Jetta GLI vs 2012 Golf GTI

IMO, the Jetta would be the better family car/grand tourer. Longer wheelbase means more room and more comfort, especially for the back seats. For a daily driver, I dunno...maybe the Jetta again; I honestly like the Audi-esque looks more than the GTI (and had I waited a year to get my car, things may have been different, what with the GLI Autobahn w/Nav having bixenons, LEDs, and rearview camera). There is no question that the shorter wheelbase and lighter weight of the GTI is a handling advantage, plus VW's cost cutting measures hurt the Jetta more than the Golf...but if you aren't tracking your car, then what's the benefit?

I do wish VW had kept the scissor style trunklid hinges from the previous generation; you could literally pack the truck to the rafters and nothing would crush when you closed the lid. Thing was damn cavernous, too.

All we need now is a Passat R or RS or R25...slap a turbo on the I5, add 4motion and bixenon+LED, and stiffen up the suspension...

Or team up with HPA to turbocharge the 3.6l and add the bixenons...thing would be a nasty sleeper.

I like that. A performance oriented Passat would be great. I wish they would drop the 3.6 and use the Golf R 2.0T. That motor not only is more dynamic but is of course easier to modify.

Then add some sort of sport package with larger wheels (19's on that car from the factory would not be out of place), stiffer suspension, and some other cosmetic goodies. AWD would just be the icing on the cake to me but I could do without for cost purposes.

I would easily pay $32k-$34k for a Passat R 2.0T w/ 252hp that is just like the current $29k V6 SEL but with larger wheels, stiffer suspension, larger brakes, and other cosmetic things like steering wheel, alloy pedals, contrast-stitching, etc.

I bought my 2010 GTI and wouldn't want a 2012 at all. When I bought mine, nearly all options were stand alone and not part of pre-configured packages. I got mine exactly how I wanted with nothing more/less than I wanted and for nothing more/less then I wanted to spend.

It worked out okay for me. I wanted every available option ;) (18's, leather,dsg,rns510)

^the r36 vr is actually a very tunable motor...it does a lot better with bolt ons than the r32 vr...plus it makes 290hp stock, why downgrade to 250 stock...

It makes 280hp/256lb-ft stock and the EA118 K04 motor from the Golf R/TT-S is much more mod friendly and has a better power band out of the box. Not to mention it is lighter too.

And APR dynoed the Golf R at 273hp/265lb-ft (VW rates it at 256hp/243lb-ft). Just $600 gets you to 306hp/292lb-ft from that motor.

I would much prefer that setup. Plus the 3.6 doesn't get great mileage and it is pretty unreliable.

The only other real option from VAG is the 3.0T from Audi. That motor makes anywhere from 272hp to 333hp. That would be a great motor but is likely pretty expensive and I think VW/Audi are trying to use completely separate motors in the future. Currently the only motor shared is the motor in the 8P A3.

The 2.5T would obviously never happen.

If you are comfortable thinking that a GTI runs 0.3 seconds behind an STI, then you would probably be comfortable thinking that a GLI runs 8 seconds behind a GTI.

And in reality, that 8 second difference is only 4%. 5%-7% is considered significant by most sources for a variance in performance.

I am not confident that the GTI is that good, I am confident that the GLI is that bad. To be three seconds slower than the Civic Si with the same driver on the same day is pretty sad.... As long as they don't dumb down the GTI like that i'll still be happy.
