I think the deal is that the Eos wasn't selling well as a standalone model, though it was obviously based on the same platform as the MK5. Because it was differentiated with a different name, however, it likely lost sales.
Consider that the convertible Beetle exists as a somewhat comparable option as well.
If VW is going to try to revive sales of a "Golf-based convertible", they'll probably be better off getting rid of the Eos name, and naming the next version a
Golf Cabrio.
Maybe they'll even send it off to Karmann for the conversions again like before.
Maybe they'll give it a center roll bar too. Just for old times sake.
