Well folks, I can confirm the 'official' top end speed of the GTI is typically conservative of VW, as I suspect the sprint times are also.

Don't snatch at the brakes above 140 though as the back end gets mighty light!

Drive safe now.

Indicated 150mph when I ran out of bottle (and road).

Probably 145mph in real terms.

Didn't take too long to get there, and felt good for another 5mph or so which makes the manufacturer quoted 149mph seem about right.

The road I was on was a hilly, twisty stretch of dual carraigeway, which made the feat even more impressive. Car felt pretty stable, considering it is essentially a family hatch on morphine.

I used to have an '86 Camaro IROC-Z that had a speedo that only read to 85mph. Used to have big fun guessing the speed from how quickly the speedo needle did a full circle of the guage!

Might be the tires. Most of the time the gov is for the tires not holding up under those speeds. That's cool though that you felt it still had more room to go, good sign.
