Mobil 1 Formula M?

I recently took my 2013 GTI into the shop for routine 50k service, which included an oil change. It looks like they used Mobil 1 Formula M 5W40 engine oil, which does not meet VW 502. Looks like it's approved for Mercedes 229.5.

Does anybody have any experience with this particular engine oil?

I am surprised the shop did not use VW spec oil since they are an extremely reputable shop that specializes in European cars.

You'll most likely be OK. What did the shop say when you questioned their choice of oil.

That Mercedes 229.5 is basically equivalent to VW 502 and that it will be fine for the car...I don't see anything online verifying that though.
