K04 install HELP!!!

DawnsKayBug1

OK so Im installing the APR K04 turbo. I have a couple of ?s .
The heat sheild that makes a handy tool holder. How did you guys take that off? there is a bolt holding it on but is almost against the manifold making it unreachable.
When you got all the nuts off the manifold does it just pop off?

I have the axle off oil drained. I disconnected the one oil line and I cant get the coolant line off the turbo.

I just thought of unbolting the engine mount :( . Where is it at?

Im doing this on base at the DIY auto shop . They have almost all the tools I need.

APR included "instructions" but that was mainly for putting on the parts they included.

Im not trying to call out APR. They dont have to provide instructions and they did for what was included. I couldnt find any haynes or Bentley manual for our cars.

One option is a (daily) subscription to Erwin.

Another option is this book. I have one, and it's quite good (but Mk5, not Mk6).

Good luck,

Bob

Well day 2 is over got tall the mainfold bolts off and then realized I need to diconnect the plug by the DV valve... Which has about 1 inch of space to get somethign to get it off. usually i but a flat head in it and pop it off. But I cant get to it.

So you have the axle out, oil drained, oil drain line off the engine and the manifold bolts off?

I recommend pulling the heatshield above the turbo to give you room to work. It has two of the large bolts in it, I get to them with a short extension and a socket. If I remember correctly there are two more small bolts in the heatshield as well to keep it from rattling. Remove the wiring harness to the DV and N75 valve and pull it out of the way so you can't accidentally break a connector somehow. Pull the pancake pipe loose from the intercooler hose and the turbo, then loosen the T30s holding it to the engine and pull it off and out of the way so you can install the silicone APR hose on the pancake pipe for later installation as one assembly.
You have to remove the coolant line from the turbo on the firewall side of the turbo. Also remove the T25 holding the hardline onto the turbo at the DV flange. Then take loose the oil feed line from the top of the turbo as well.

Post up any other questions you have.

90% of all my problems was the MFin heat shield. I couldnt get the Allen bolt off next to the mainfold. Once the heat shield was off Easy cheezy. This took maybe 75% of my time. Fighting everything that was in its way and not being able to see anything also. I wont be able to mess with it till Saturday. I have to put on the DV valve pancake pipe and the rest of the hoses. Oh and the pass side upper mainfold bolts which seem like they are gonna be a PITA

Use a ~3" extension with a deep socket and a 3/8s ratchet. The manifold bolts are very easy to get from the top.

I meant lower pass side bolts. The uppers are easy once that heat shield is gone

There are no lower turbo manifold bolts that need to be removed to pull the turbo. The lower "V" blocks stay on the head and the turbo just sits into them. If you're referring to the lower engine side downpipe nut then yes I agree those do take a little time to get out unless you have a ratcheting wrench or ratchet extension socket combo that fits in the available space just right.

Good luck with the install sir. If you did remove the lower "V" blocks from the head I suggest re-installing them before you try to install the turbo. That way to can lift the turbo in from the bottom and set the turbo into them. The turbo will sit there while you hand start all of the upper manifold bolts and wiggle everything into place.

'yeah I removed them and yeah I realized I needed to have them on prior to reinstalling the turbo. With the heat shield off it was very easy.
I will start working on it friday after work or Sat morning Im meeting AJ Foyt and Al Unser JR friday night so probably sat.
