Knocking (popping) noise after DG springs install...

sinistro

Ready to race!
Well, it started to happen 3 weeks ago and this past week got louder... everytime I turn the steering wheel left or right I hear several knocking noises, especially when driving slow (like parking the car). I took the car today to the dealer (they originally installed the DG springs for me) and the techs said it was a normal noise

Here is what the print out says:

"Road tested and found normal sound caused by spring movement against strut bearing."... "Found slight clicking noise. With vehicle on hoist, heard noise coming from upper spring coil against strut bearing. This is a normal noise due to lowering springs. Alternative methods may be used to remedy this noise but is not an authorized repair through the dealership"

Can anyone help me out in what to do?

Danny Boy...What's your drop-height set at? Gonna keep a record of this, doing two STs this week - hopefully I get somewhere to help people out with this issue... (on the other hand I myself am not convinced it's coil bind due to lower than normal drops on customer installs)

I had a click noise as well after I did the install. Luckily my buddy had the same thing when he did his FSB. The endlink bolts have to be as tight as possible. That sure didn't sound like the cause of the loud clicking but it sure was.

Did you use new strut bearings?

They're only $10-12/each from the dealer, and recommended by VW that they be changed when doing the struts btw

Hey Dan...are the strut bearings listed in your hardware needed for install in the first post of the DG thread? I'm heading to my dealer today or tomorrow to pick up the hardware listed and wanted to be sure I get the strut bearings.

Thanks!!

The cause of the problem is not SPRING BIND (coils slapping together). The problem is most likely TUG'N"RELEASE whereby the top coil twists inside the top strut aperture creating a clunking noise. This is most likely caused by lowering with stiffer springs, that do not have enough give when wheels are turned at parking centre (low) speeds. Many strut type springs and some coilovers exhibit this problem ... esp on the Golf R32 which is heavier than the GTI. See WJ's suspension thread for more info.

KW ... Bilstein ... Tein ... coilovers generally should not be prone to TUG'N'RELEASE on the Golf GTI. The H&R SPC coilover tug'n'released on a mate's R32 MKV. Almost all types of strut type springs tug'n'release on the R32 and some on the Golf GTI ... moreso the lower and harder progressive type spring. When the front wheels are turned to full lock, they lean over causing the spring to flex to it's side. If the spring is too short & stiff, the whole spring moves against strut tops. The analysis made by the Volkswagen dealer is most likely correct. The MKV and MKVI Golf platform is not an easy platform to modify in terms of suspension & lowering.
