OEM S3 Short Shifter Review

Gunkata

Drag Race Newbie
I only got to drive the car for a bit after the install, but I am blown away by this. After installing aftermarket short shifters in both my STI's and dealing with a lot of increased effort, as well as more NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) with any bushings, this OEM fix is definitely the way to go.

Throws are reduced as advertised by ECS, some 20 percent or so. Maybe even a bit more, but it was instantly noticeable and the effort is the same as stock. Seems a tad more precise as well. I bought mine from another vendor though, it is an OEM part, Audi Part#8J0711046E

Overall, I think this is a great bang for your buck mod (approx $50), and if you are not looking for crazy huge reduction of 30-40% or whatever, this is a great way to keep the good parts of the stock feel/shifter, and also reduce the throw. It was great just driving on the street, so I can't wait for the track. Very happy with this

I ordered mine from Bud Klemp VW Audi salesman on VWVortex. $55 shipped to me in Canada. I'm still waiting for it to arrive and am really looking forward to it.
Thanks for the short review.

Are all of the short shifters replacements for the mechanism on top of the transmission? How hard would you say it was to replace?

This is probably exactly what i want. I love OEM+ and im not looking to molest my clean new car but the stock throws are HUGE coming from my last car with an aftermarket short throw.

I had someone else install it for me, but this one looks easier than the aftermarket units for sale. I think that link I posted has a DIY in it.

I'm a VW tech and the guy who installed Gunkata's short throw.

Not only is a direct fit but it looks, installs, and feels the same as stock. Even the finish and material used is the same as stock. If you looked at the part the only way you can tell it's not the factory on is if you physically lined it up with a stock one and compared the length of the arms. Other then the sorter throws when shifting it's undetectable, you can only tell based on feel.

Thanks for the reassurance, DBest. I am putting this on my short list of things to do ASAP. :w00t:

The big difference in appearance that I noted is that the stock GTI part is marked 'VW AG' and the new short shift part is marked with the Audi rings.

again, unless you compare them side by side your not gonna notice a difference. Audi markings are common on VW stuff, it does not raise any warning flags.
