Rear badge vinyl insert - plaid vw - DIY - gti install w/plastidip

Just ordered this insert off ebay, but he also sells them here: http://www.kliimotorwerkes.com/

Picked up my GTI a few weeks ago, and the first thing I did was Plasti-dip my emblems. I thought the rear emblem just looked a little too blah, and wanted to spice it up a bit... But let me say this, I imagine this install is much easier without plasti-dipped emblems. The little bit of rubbery tackiness and worry of scratching or peeling the black plasti, made the decal a little more of a pain to work with.

Install is pretty straight-forward if you've ever worked with vinyls before. If you have application tools, use em. I do have some, but for the sake of writing up a DIY, I like using everyday household items like my driver's license, garden hose, fingers, etc.

First impressions: I loved the packaging, this is what people love. Apple products, Beats headphones (even though they suck), etc. - it's all in the details. Came in a padded envelope, with a little thank you / instructions sheet.

Start by spraying down your emblem, if you wanna go the extra mile, rinse/clean it with a very light soap/water mix.

Let it air dry, dry it with a non-lint filled towel, or use a can of air if you have it.

Typically with vinyls you want to apply the middle and then work your way to the outsides to remove all air bubbles. For this though, I think it is way easier to jam a corner into place and work from there. They are cut pretty much to the exact dimensions, so you don't have a whole lot of room for error. Use something like an ID card to push out any bubbles and make sure that the decal is pressed firmly into the plastic.

I did the top center and the two sides first.

Saved the trickiest piece for last...

Use something thin like your ID to push the little middle strip in. Then just try your best to line each of the sides up, and smooth them out like you did the rest. You'll need something thin and pointy to get the corners to seat in.

Ten or so minutes later, depending on how much of a perfectionist you are, you'll be done.

I know, my car is due for a good wash, we just had some really dirty rain last night here in Denver.

And a shot of the front, just because.

This is perfect- thank you so much for posting this!! :w00t: I've had a good amount of people ask about the installation process prior to purchasing, so I'll be pointing them here in the future.

And this:

"I loved the packaging, this is what people love. Apple products, Beats headphones (even though they suck), etc. - it's all in the details. Came in a padded envelope, with a little thank you / instructions sheet."

is extremely appreciated. I feel the same exact way with regards to the details, and no doubt this makes a more substantial, better first impression than just the vinyl in an envelope.

Congrats on the GTI, and your emblems look great! :D:D:D

As straight forward as this may be for some people, thanks for taking the time to write this up and take pictures!

Thanks, and yeah, pretty straight forward for anyone that's applied a sticker, but i always appreciate someone walking me through the steps when i'm new at something.

What did you use for the front emblem
It's actually a matte black ABS plastic one I picked up off ebay. I've found from experience that plasti dip on front emblems doesn't hold up well on colorado winter roads. Chrome one pops out and this one pops in to replace it.

If anyone has used the soapy water method of installing and positioning decals, I would not recommend it for this decal. With the raised surface of the VW emblem it is impossible to adequately squeegee out the soapy water and the decal will not stick properly. You're probably better off installing it dry as described in the first post.

Just passing along knowledge from my screw up-- for what its worth.

i couldnt get the chrome off for the life of me, and i followed a tutorial on vwortex

yeah, it isn't nearly as easy as some people make it out to be, mine wasn't anyways. I took the grill off and pried the emblem from every direction. Eventually it came loose enough to spin about 30 degrees, and then theoretically it can pop out pretty easy from there. I still had to pry mine even when it was spun though...

just be patient.
