Have who evers car it is for call around and get price quotes... that seems like a logical first step.

I think the intake manifold has to come off and lots of various other bits and pieces...
I think its listed at 6-7 hrs of labor...

Warranty doesn't pay much but for customer pay, All Data is the the standard for non warranty time. I just looked it up for a 2009 TSI it calls for 5.9 hours when it's not warranty. $800 doesn't seem unreasonable at all considering you need the water pump, the union (or at the bare minimum 2 seals for the union), 2 new seals in quick disconnect hoses, new seal on the metal pipe that bolts into the front of it, new toothed belt, VW's G12 coolant, and 2 of the 5 screws that hold it in call for replacement each time.

Sounds about right. There is no replacement interval for the belt or the pump - so I don't know why anyone is looking to do it unless it is leaking.

On longitudinal mount cars (A4) its fairly easy to do (with the exception of breaking the right-hand thread 12mm), but FWD cars it is a PITA. It can be done without removing the IM. But I've seen guys do it with the manifold off and it is worlds easier on transverse engine cars.

sounds like a normal estimate. most shops charge anywhere from $60-120/hr labor, plus cost of parts.

Removing the intake manifold is way more work than it's worth, it doesn't really make it any easier, warranty doesn't pay you to remove it either.

For what it's worth I started having issues with mine yesterday. Luckily I was at VW when it happened and they are taking care of it.

Hope you find a solution for less than 800
