Got to drive the "R"!

Had a chance to drive the new R. Mostly the same as my GTI, except when you mash the go pedal no wheel slip, goes like stink and rounding corners the car feels a little better set. Oh, what a track car. Dealer at MSRP and no one waiting. As Autoweek says "Goes like a GTI with a firecracker up it's ass!"

Think I would go for a used R32 before the new R. The sound alone is amazing.

Theres one sitting at my dealer for couple of weeks now. As good/rare as it is, i dont suppose lot of ppl want to spend 36k on a hatch.

Like pretty much everyone else, the price is the deciding factor for me. Rather just have a fully loaded GTI or a reasonably equipped A3 for the same money. Don't get me wrong the extra power, AWD, and all the other goodies are great. But when it all comes down to it, I'm very content with my GTI.

I picked up my 2011 4 door GTI with the Autobahn package only 10k miles with a CPO warranty for a full $10k less than the loaded 4 door Golf R that I had a deposit down on. It didn't make sense for me. With a $600 Stage 1 tune, my GTI is already faster. AWD would be killer, but I couldn't justify it for $10k. Maybe I'll pick up a slightly used one in a few years.

No DSG, no R for me. I can only afford one car , I drive in a rush hour, and quite frankly, at forty, Im ready for an auto.

That price for an R would get you relatively close to a euro delivery 328i with the new turbo four. After TTL and dealer fees, 40 grand is quite a bit for a golf.

That being said, it's baddass. Give me a DSG R for less than 35k out the door, and I would do strongly consider it.

exactly. im starting to like the looks of the R more, but for the money id go for that 328i 4 in a heartbeat over the R.

I know me and cars, and I am purposely not going to test drive it....I keep drooling over APR's R offerings. To me, its not so much what the cars is now, but the potential...and the awd makes that potential very high imho. Having owned an R32 in the past, its says a lot about how much I like my GTI, that I haven't put down a downpayment on one...and to keep it that way, I am not testing one
