My dealer has had a DB 2 dr loaded R since late March (about the same time I bought my mk6 autobahn). Of course they wouldn't let me test drive it then so I didn't consider buying it then.
I just went back yesterday for a detail and started talking to my sales guy who I happen to have a good relationship with. I asked if the new 0% applied to the R and he said "probably not... Why you interested?". I replied "at 0% I am!"
Anyway, the short story is that now I own the R!
My logic was this (wait this decision really defies logic!):
With only having to put 5k down and my payments being roughly the same, I would have spent way more money on the mods on the GTI to go K04 + brakes + suspension + AWD etc. Not to mention the hundreds of hours spent lurking this forum researching the perfect upgrade modding path to get me K04. Even still I probably would never have gotten AWD.
It was a deal too good to pass up! Literally, K04 would have been at least 2 years away for me if I continued modifying the GTI to get there.
I'll try to write up a detailed comparison soon, but real quick the first thing I am loving about the R is SMOOTH shifting. Especially from 1st to 2nd.. It's like butter. Also, SMOOTH power delivery.
I know I'll miss the better fuel economy of the GTI. Also, I haven't tuned it yet so I will say that the stage 1+ (uni) GTI can definitely keep up with or maybe even better a stock R.
Getting my tune this week!
