Test drove the R

My dealer has had a DB 2 dr loaded R since late March (about the same time I bought my mk6 autobahn). Of course they wouldn't let me test drive it then so I didn't consider buying it then.

I just went back yesterday for a detail and started talking to my sales guy who I happen to have a good relationship with. I asked if the new 0% applied to the R and he said "probably not... Why you interested?". I replied "at 0% I am!"

Anyway, the short story is that now I own the R!

My logic was this (wait this decision really defies logic!):
With only having to put 5k down and my payments being roughly the same, I would have spent way more money on the mods on the GTI to go K04 + brakes + suspension + AWD etc. Not to mention the hundreds of hours spent lurking this forum researching the perfect upgrade modding path to get me K04. Even still I probably would never have gotten AWD.

It was a deal too good to pass up! Literally, K04 would have been at least 2 years away for me if I continued modifying the GTI to get there.

I'll try to write up a detailed comparison soon, but real quick the first thing I am loving about the R is SMOOTH shifting. Especially from 1st to 2nd.. It's like butter. Also, SMOOTH power delivery.

I know I'll miss the better fuel economy of the GTI. Also, I haven't tuned it yet so I will say that the stage 1+ (uni) GTI can definitely keep up with or maybe even better a stock R.

Getting my tune this week!

I just bought a base 4-Door and I am thinking I will drive it a few years and then scoop up a used or new R 4-Door. Looked at one while I was there but just wasn't sold on $12K extra for AWD and different seats.

Yeah...I drove one last week too....And came away with the same Price/Value question. Didn't impress me enough to pay that differential on a trade, considering what could be done to mine for far less...AWD is nice, but not a must have for me.

The price/value is EXACTLY why I said this decision defies logic! wtf is wrong with me lol! I just figured if I'm already paying $500+ for a GTI, then I might as well have an R.

AWD is a big deal for me because I chase snow looking for the best skiing here in the NE. I'll always regret not being able to get out of my neighborhood for the biggest snow fall of 2010. My buddies still rip into me for missing that!

Either way, anyone NOT valuing AWD has no reason to get the R if $ is a huge factor. A tuned GTI HAS the power.

You guys are 100% correct!

Went to my dealer Tuesday for my 30k service and they had 3 R's.

Looked at a CW Base. No hassles at all, they said $515/month and they'd allow $2k more than I owed on the GTI.

I passed.

Not only that, but the R doesn't look as good as the GTI either.
I parked across the street from my VW dealer yesterday (my son had a birthday party to go to in the bowling alley next door) and there was a red R outside.
It's got less eye appeal than the GTI.

Funny... I love my GTI, but prefer the looks of the R.

I think R in Rising Blue and those stock wheels looks much better than a stock GTI.

Besides, you don't just buy a AWD GTI, the R has a better built itself. So, yes I would see myself getting an R, I see the value in price difference, but only if I could get a DSG here in US.

Congrats! The R has a lot of potential, good platform to begin modding.

looks are subjective. The R looks good to me in person, but really needs a little more flash like the GTI. (red trim, black side skirt, better wheels, etc)

No DSG availability for the Golf R in the States was a dealbreaker for me. I'm also not a huge AWD person, as I know how to drive (so I don't need it for a bad weather crutch) and I'm not a stoplight racer.

Other than that, the Golf R is essentially a GTI with a head-start on mods.

For $37K I would buy a new STI any day over the R. Now a used R for around $30K and we might talk. Money for money, for $37K there is way better cars out there, the STI is just miles above in almost every aspect except interior quality.
