Problem:
I noticed that, during spirited driving when paddles are in use and my hands are at the proper 10:30 / 2:30 position on the steering wheel, I could not reach the factory DSG paddles to change gears.
Solution?:
Paddle extenders, brought to us by member "Vento 3."
How to get them?:
Easy to order via Paypal link provided by the Mk5 forum or by PM from Vento 3, they took about 1 week to arrive from Canada after being mailed; I was eager to try them out.
Installation:
However, weather in central Ohio turned to the better and I ended up waiting a few days to drive the GTI again (driving the "toy" to and from work for the sunny days). I did finally get them installed, and what an easy install it was. The backing pieces (see photo below) that are made to hold the DSG paddle extenders in place appear to be custom-engineered/molded to fit the existing factory paddles.
Product Quality:
The fit and finish of the product is excellent. Very good look, smooth finish and good extension lengths to the provide the proper height for the paddles that should have come from the factory (ala Lamborghini E-Shift or Ferarri F1 Shifters). Once installed, I noticed almost right away the clearances between the turn signal stalk and the wiper stalk were limited (small interferences with fingers), depending on your hand position and steering angle.
This was easily cured on the left side by pushing the turn signal stalk forward in the bright light mode - plenty of room now.
Now for the right side, if you push the wiper stalk forward you end up turning on the rear wiper - not good.
Driving:
Driving with the paddles, I noticed the 80/20 rule applied. That is 80% of the time the paddles provided the needed access (in the proper hand positions on the steering wheel) for shifting in manual mode, and 20% of the time, my fingers are interferring with the wiper stalk, while turning. As long as I'm careful, I don't seem to move the wiper stalk to activate the wipers.
Conclusion:
Overall, I'm glad I did the mod and the more I drive with it, the more I will likely get used to it.
