NO LONGER LOOKING TO SELL, SHIPPING IT TO ENGLAND

I am potentially looking to sell my car. I am likely embarking on a move to the UK and may not be able to or want to take my car with me. The move will not happen for many months, nor has the decision been made. With that said, I want to consider options that I have, including selling the car. I would have thought I would keep it for the next 10 years, as I love it to death, but circumstances change.

Please do not ask for me to part items.

I've listed the general ball park range of the various installed parts. These are only ballparks; I did not go by receipts or anything. I am also likely missing some aftermarket parts as there's just too many of them. I will try to update this as I remember them.

Bump. Most certainly moving to London, still a feeler as I think I can take it with me though. Found that Geico will even insure me in the UK for about the same cost.

But if anyone is interested, I'd leave it behind.

For anybody that is curious as to what happened to this car, I thought I'd document the write up.

I did end up shipping it over to the UK, very much trouble free. The did a lot of research on the process, and minimized the overall time that I did not have the car in my possession to about a month. I dropped it off at a shipping company in Toronto in early December (2014) and received it at my flat in central London (UK) on the 2nd of January. More specifically, the car was boxed up into a container in Toronto and put on a train to Montreal. From Montreal, it was put on a direct boat to Liverpool (UK). It went through customs there, and then was shipped on an open flat bed truck from Liverpool to London. The whole thing was very smooth and painless, and cost about $3,500. A large part of the cost is because I did not ship RoRo -- meaning the car was not empty (I had tons of stuff, like tires and other things I was moving, in it).

Driving on the wrong side of the road wasn't an issue. I would say the roundabouts are quite crazy sometimes. I also didn't have to worry about automatic detection cameras (speeding or red light cameras) anywhere in Europe, as I kept my Ontario plates when in the UK (all legal by the way), so that was a bonus. I took frequent trips through the Channel Tunnel over to continental Europe -- one time, in just one day, my car was in something like 9 countries.

I went on the Nurburgring twice with my car (been once before with a rental), both times paid for 4 laps. The first time, had no issues. Lot's of breaks between laps as there is typically an accident once every 1-2 laps.

The second time, on the second lap (after 2+ hours of waiting for a crash to clear after the first lap -- should have just left!), I crashed into the barrier.

If I were to guess what happened, I would think it's related to brakes and brake fluid, and not so much the speed of entry. Was very lucky in hitting the tires and skidding for so long beforehand. I was wearing a helmet and airbags did not deploy. Luckily this was towards the end of the session on the Saturday (about 6pm when I crashed -- track closes at 7pm). It took crews about 15 minutes to come. Paramedics came and did a thorough assessment, and the crew took all of my information, and the car was towed to the one and only garage for Nurburgring accidents. I also paid about 700 EUR for repair to armco (by hitting the tires, I pushed it back) -- which is a bargain to some of the other stories I've read.

On Sunday, I went to go check the car out. While I was lucky in that I was not injured at all (although I did feel sore after the night's sleep), I managed to hit basically every single body panel on the passenger side of the car. This wasn't going to be cheap. The car still technically did run.

I got an estimate for repair from the garage for 15,000 EUR a week later.

When I returned back home, I read the insurance policy document from start to finish, and was very surprised to learn that it did not exclude my activity on the Nurburgring. I researched other UK-based insurance policies, and most exclude Nurburgring by name, while mine did not. I started with the insurance process right away, being very open where I crashed -- as I was actually not at all racing, but driving on a de-restricted toll road.

I also ended up hiring an automotive lawyer that assisted me in various interactions with the insurance company. At first, they denied my claim due to racing activity. I disagreed, and they sent an investigator to interview me. I complied and created a long statement on the facts, where I had also listed my modifications to the vehicle, in full (side note: I think they looked at this thread). After another two months of constantly asking for updates, I finally received a second decision to deny, now on the basis of undeclared modifications, with my policy being cancelled.

I then filled for arbitration with the Ombudsman, as I had never been asked to declare my modifications, and that is one of the questions they need to ask to be able to deny me the claim. The adjudicator, very quickly (1 month), had spoken to me and the insurance company -- and the insurance company agreed to cover my claim in full, including the (depreciated) cost of my modifications. I received the payment earlier today.

This experience has taught me several things:
- I will always read policy documents from now on to know my rights and limits.
- I will not set foot on unathorized roads (i.e. race tracks for track days) without insurance.
- I will no longer modify my cars: it is absolutely not worth the hassle. Instead I will buy vehicles that come as I like them from factory.

Let me know if you have any questions on any of the details.

That particular curve/section is terrifying... downhill all the way through the braking zone, then it throws in a right left to destabilize the car... and you add slippery conditions....

You know that I am the first one to feel for you.

Yea it's an interesting curve, but certainly not the most difficult. I am okay though and got fair compensation. Still miss the car.

Thanks for the update. Saw your VCDS thread in the UK section.

REALLY happy to hear you're OK. I still have your dash cubby that I've yet to install. It's been about a year I think.

I'd be curious to know what other cars are in that graveyard at the 'ring.
