Saw a Chrysler TC "by Maserati" on the road today...

I'm a car guy. I love cars. One hardly gets past me on the road that I can't recognize. If someone suddenly blindfolded me while I was driving, I could probably tell you the make, model, and approximate year of every car around me.

Driving home from work today I saw what I thought was a Chrysler LeBaron convertible that someone put a hard top on. I mostly dismissed it as I thought to myself, "I figured all those things had rusted out by now." However, at the next red light I got up behind it and saw the badge. I was stunned when I realized what it was. Being only 31, I was too young to remember them when they were being produced in '89-91. Although I've heard plenty of jokes made about them around automotive forums and in car magazines. When I got home I looked up the Wikipedia Page. First I was surprised to see what crappy engines it came with. (My '89 BMW 325i could have run circles around one.) Then my jaw hit the floor when I realized one of these turds cost $33,000. THIRTY THREE THOUSAND DOLLARS IN 1989!

Once I picked my jaw up off the floor, I got to the comedic relief near the bottom of the Wikipedia page: 7,300 morons actually bought these things! Who the heck buys an over priced LeBaron with the horsepower of a Ford Escort built on a Dodge Daytona platform for more than a BMW 325i convertible?

I'm guessing every single one of those people went on to vote for Obama if they're still alive today.

Now all I can think about is how Top Gear chose the Lexus SC430 (an awful car in it's own way) over the TC as the worst car ever made.

That's my bit of automotive trivia for you today.

I remember when they hit the streets. An epic failure in every way possible.

Seems like it could have been a decent car with the 200hp engine and 5-speed options, no?

Only a handful of cars had that engine. Most ran a 150ish hp engine with 3 speed auto. I believe it also got mileage in the teens. K car platform

Total period car. Just drove home the point of excess that was the 80s.

rofl. A Chrysler K-Car can never be a symbol of excess. More like, symbol of cheap appliance transportation, circa 1985. And I'll take my New Coke and rubik's cube with that.
