strange metal noises inside in the front - Golf GTI VI

Hi to all,

I am a new here, I just registered today. I checked all your threads but it seems that none of you have the same problem like I do with my car. I have a new GTI, purchased in january 2010 as a press car. I had to already change the turbocharger because of minor oil leak and the waterpump too, as it made the "whining noises".

Unfortunatelly I have to copy with another issue. It seems, that the noises in the front started to make after my first oil service. It ussually happens by aggressive acceleration or braking. I found out that I can simulate the metal noises by making aggressive turns - like driving slalom even with the low speed - 20 mil/ hour.

First I thought that its the front seat, the adjustment system which moves the seat on the rails, but I cannot hear the noise, if the car is not moving. Even "jumping" on the seat to provocate it :))

Its difficult to explain the noise, but its like taut metal thing, which is suddenly released. The other thing I realized, that it never make that noise again, after second turn to the same hand side.

Hopefully its not the DSG, as it "still" smoothly shifts. I checked the rear seats too, but its not that issue.

Anyone has the same problem?

Thanks for help.

Martin.

Since you mentioned aggressive acceleration, so is the problem similar to this: http://www.golfmk6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8045

thanks for the link.

I read that already, but I do not think its my case.

As I mentioned above, The sound does not matter on the acceleration/ braking at all.
I tried to simulate it, using the cruise control with the low speed and everytime I made aggressive turns I heard that noise.

It seems that its not connected with the exhaust system, or turbocharger components.

Its always connected to aggressive cornering. I

Here's some information on the ticking when turning rattle problem.

Does it happen when you turn into one particular direction? Does it sound like a loud "Crack" coming from the left hand side of the car either under the seat or left hand side suspension?

Hi Alex GTI,

yes, it sounds the same way like you said a loud "crack", why you are asking?

I was yesterday in service, and was told it might be the loose steering wheel bar

I am also not quite certain what it is. I replicated the sound when my friend was in my car and he mentioned it is the seat itself not being tightened to the rails which are holding it. Have you tried replicating the sound when somebody is sitting in the passenger seat? Maybe get their opinion?

The sound is quite worrying though cause it really does sound like it is coming from the left front suspension and it is really irritating.

I always get the sound when I break quite hard before turning left like at a junction. :mad0259:

Have any of you brought your car for service to try to fix this?

Did they try to fix it or did they have a look at the sterring wheel bar? Get them to sit in your car and replicate the sound and see what they say.

Yes, I was driving my car with the mechanic, first he thought it might be the seat which makes the noises, as I mentioned above in my first email, but he started to hear the noise more from the front part inside, close to the steering bar, so he said it can be something with the steering mechanism.
Furthermore, we stopped the car, the mechanic went outside - to check whether the sound does not come outside from the left front wheel, . We found out that it makes a silent click sounds whenever the steering wheel was turned . ... therefore he made a conclusion that it might be the steering bar which can be loose - he also mentioned that some of the recent VW Passat have the same problem. Finally I was told to come on Thursday = Tomorrow into the service to change the bar.

Anyway I was not happy with the fact that they will have to remove the steering bar and the whole idea of the repair itself. So I asked another mechanic to move the car up on the car lift today.

And we found out that the bolts which held the axle subframe and the main frame in the front are not mounted properly ( used torque). There are cca. six bolts. So this is the conclusion:

1. tomorrow the new bolts will be ordered and on friday mounted properly ( the old bolts cannot be used again)
2 if the no. 1 repair procedure does not work, the steering bar is going to be changed.

Anyway, I ll make a picture with the description and post it here tomorrow.

Hopefully GunmetalGTI was right. (do you know the order code of those special Audi bolts you mentioned?

To Alex GTI, sometimes it makes the sound by hard breaking before turning left or hard accelerating. But the best way, in my case, how to replicate the loud "crack" sound is by changing directions - like driving slalom with aggressive (hard) turning movements on the steering wheel. The strange fact is that it does not appear when the car is cold.

I see. Let me know if that fixes the problem entirely. Please take some pics so perhaps can compare. Thanks in advance and all the best!

So, finally a good message, the strange sound has disappeared after the the new bolts (the same like the old) were mounted correctly.
In the following photo you see the 6 bolts I changed

and here you see that the axle subframe was actually so loose that it was moving - see the clean part around the mounting point.
