16" wheels and Blizzak Winter Package Review

I just mounted my winter wheel package. 16" Sport Edition CE silver painted wheels and 205/55-16 Blizzak WS70 tires. Quite a difference driving with 16" tires versus the 225/40-18 Conti DSWs. Here are some comments.

First, the Sport Editions were not my first choice and are OK looking, but I bought them second-hand explicitly for use in the winter at a price I couldn't turn down. The silver paint color almost makes them look like plastic. Maybe in summer, I'll paint them a gloss black or a gunmetal gray.

I had to use hub centering rings when mounting the wheel to convert the bore of the wheel to the center hub on the GTI. While centering rings DO come with a purchase direct from Tire Rack, the second-hand purchase did not include them so I had to order a set. $1.50 each x 4 = $6.00 + $7.68 shipping. It took 24 hours to get them to my door. Gotta love Tire Rack. Thanks for the great service, Tanner!

As I said, driving the vehicle is a lot different with the 16" Blizzaks, especially in cornering. You can feel the sway from the larger sidewalls around curves and off ramps. There is definitely less precision when changing lanes and cornering. But it's a snow tire with a taller sidewall. You have to expect that. They are a tad louder on the highway, but are fairly smooth and hold the center of the lane well. The ride is a lot softer over bumps and lane grooves. Again, the taller sidewall.

Roads were damp on the way to work this morning and the tire held traction well. Of course, anything is better then the well-worn Conti DSWs that I took off.

Can't wait to try them in the snow and slush. I'll add to this thread after the first experience with in the white cold stuff.

As for overall looks, not great. The GTI looks much better with Detroits and low profile 18's, so it will be a long winter staring at this set-up, but I'll get used to it and it will be beautiful when the Detroits go back on in March. This winter setup makes the GTI look like a regular Golf. Nothing wrong with Golfs, but this is a GTI. My son said the new wheels/tires make it look like Doc Brown's Delorean when Marty McFly was running through the 1950's drive-in movie headed toward the Old West in 1885. More later. Pictures when I take some.

Nice. I have a set of ws80's that I'll be mounting soon to stock 16" golf wheels. I'm curious to see how the new Blizzak feels.

OP - The colder the temps get the more stable they will feel. They're a bear in the ice and snow, just try not to drive on dry pavement a lot.

Thanks. It was warm today, about 56. Cold temperatures are hitting Maryland starting tonight. We'll see how they feel. Unfortunately, sometimes Maryland's winter can be dry for weeks at a time, then we can get dumped on in Jan and Feb.

I used to run with Zacks on my winter setup.

Overall, they were pretty good here in wintery New England - didn't slide, get stuck, or spin! And yes, they get better as the conditions get worse. I will also say this, these bastards wear down somewhat quick in nice(ish) weather too. :)

I have since changed tires though, I run 205/55 Falken All seasons that work well! I'm calling it, the 'rally' approach.

Try living in the sticks of Harford County.... Have you ever seen the "wonderful" job that Harford County does in clearing roads after a snow event? We're lucky if we hear a snowplow in the distance if it snows, and the only place they use chemicals is on really dangerous hills. While Bel Air is rather populated, there are still many roads in Harford County that are off the beaten trail and don't get the attention that the roads in Baltimore/Baltimore County get.

Plus, I drive 36 miles one way to work, and you never know what you are going to encounter during a snow in Maryland. Better safe than in a ditch.

Besides, with 3 kids driving back and forth to college, having really good snow tires are "peace of mind" for dad and mom.

That's why I got a spare set of DETROITS as my winter spares, lol. Now I just gotta get some rubber to put on em. Wish winter rubber wasn't so expensive!

Those 36miles you drive to work OP is going to eat away at the tire. You should really try to use them once the first real snowfall is announced.

Too each their own, but I find that the Detroit rims are horrible for winter. I had one bad experience where snow managed to get into the exposed caliper and form ice, which seized my brakes. This only happened once, but its not fun when your brakes don't work!

I honestly hope not. I bought these as an OEM spare gig because someone sold them on craigs for $250 for all 4. They had scratches and some curb rash but I didn't care so much. My biggest issue was them being black which I painted over. Now I just need some rubber on them and I'll be all set.

Does anyone recommend any other pure winter tires that aren't as expensive as Blizzak and offer real good traction in snowy conditions?

GTI looks horrendous with tiny 16" wheels.. IMO u gotta get at least 17" snow tires & wheels if you're running them Nov-Apr every yr. otherwise it'll be :cry: everyday u see the car..

18" snow tires would be ideal but they are very expensive & not worth it.. stick with 17s
