2009 vw gti tsi balance/intermediate shaft failure

I wonder if anyone has ever encountered the problem that I encountered with my car. My 2009 GTI with 100K all of the sudden got overheated. At first I thought it was water pump problem, but when I took water pump off it turned out that the balance / intermediate shaft got stuck (the one that drives water pump). I did research over the internet but couldn't find any information related to this particular problem.
Any input would be appreciated.
PLEASE HELP!

I just got the engine out of my car , took upper and lower covers out and first thing that I've noticed is shuttered sliders(there is three sliders that support driving chain that drives balance/intermediate shafts) the upper one is ok but two on the right and left sides
in pieces . Then I saw that a gear that transfers torque to the water pump balance/intermediate shaft has few teeth missing . Well to make long story short I've got all the stuff that needed to be moved out of the way moved and tried to turn the shaft, it did moved but with lots of force and also it pupped out a little , there is a grinding marks on it . So shaft is seized now what? I don't know whether to replace the shaft or replace the engine .

Also, how did this happen?? Low oil? Taking those right hand turns a little too hard or what? Or did the chain just give way and wreak havoc?

Will post some pics tonight . Did nothing of the kind , maintaining my car from the day one by my self (don't trust dealers) got few friend mechanics but nobody knows TSIs.
Was driving to work and noticed high pitch sound not loud and in 2 minutes car got over heated and here I am . And yes the chain has slipped not the timing though.

Wow. Well at least you know how to wrench because this would cost most people a boatload of dough.

Jesus Christ what the hell happened to cause that?! That's insane. I hope that's not a wear and tear failure...

Any clue why it failed yet?

Thanks for reposting pics :) . I think there could have been three reasons for that , first clogged oil passages , second wear and tear of balance shaft and failure of guides/sliders . Nothing else comes to my mind , guys any ideas ???
I agree that I am lucky that I can do it my self (my first engine job working at Auto Body shop for more then 25 years have some experience in mechanics but not in engines ) but it still will cost me an arm and a leg . It is 100k on the engine so I will have to replace lots of stuff along with balance shaft .

dang, you know a hell of a lot about engines.. i bet 99% of the people here would never attempt that. including myself.

you do know you are on the MK6 forum with a MK5 car though, right? same engine.. i know, i had a 2009 also.
