3rd gear grind under hard acceleration

Anyone experience this? If I drive normally, I can shift from 2nd into 3rd very easily, but if I am going almost WOT, I grind only that gear. I've been driving manual for over 10 years, so I don't think it's a new driver thing...although this is a first manual VW I've driven. I hear a loud grind, have to depress the clutch pedal, slowly engage 3rd, and keep driving. 1-2nd, 3-4th, 4-5th, etc. all shift smoothly. Anything I can do to resolve it?

Might have the dealer look at it...although they never find the problem during test drives...car magically fixes itself :mad0259:

different guy. That guy was like shifting into 1st trying for 3rd. A grinding sound when shifting into 3rd at wot is another great thing it does.

Nope. Not me.

Sucks...not something I want to live with, and puts a damper on enjoying my freshly chipped GTI when I have to baby it for that one shift.

Where I don't put it directly into the gear? Doubtful. Only thing I can think of is that I don't press clutch pedal all the way or release it too soon. I'll pay more attention to that today after work. But wouldn't I have the same issue going from 3rd to 4th then? :iono:

Unless of course the transmission has been mishandled and 3rd gear synchro is wearing prematurely.

Could possibly be. This GTI was one of the first to hit my local dealer, and it had about 600-700 miles on it when I got it. Pretty sure it had some rough test drives before I took possesion of it. I just hope car does it when techs test drive it at the dealership.

Every once in a while I'll get a slight grind. My 1-2 is worse tho

I was curious about this as well. My car will grind/crunch 3rd sometimes under WOT if I'm shifting too quickly. I also noticed it will grind if you go WOT in first, coast and then try to engage 3rd. I know the O2M had all kinds of trouble and I eventually just accepted that 3rd gear was going to grind. As anyone tried any different transmission fluid?
