Hi eveyone,

just joined this forum and this is my first post.

We picked up new GTI last Thurs, lucky enough to get it after it had come in for
another customer but was missing the reversing camera, so he didnt want it.

Its a candy white 5 dr DSG with leather, dynaudio, 17's (prefer 18's), dealer
fitted front/rear parking sensors & tint.

Our first European car, so really hoping for good run as I often hear about VW reliability
issues.

Sadly we do have some issues with new car as follows:
2 x paint runs near front fog light (one raised like a bubble) GRRR
Rear tail light looked to have a round sticker on it and has been removed but plastic scuffed with rub marks
Front grill has all blotchy marks on it like water marks and front emblem is marked.
Black panel under back rear door not sitting flush with paint work.
Exhaust makes rattling sound when accelerating (see this noted under noises)
Service guy said that this may go away once driven for a bit? Hmm can anyone else
tell me if they had any of these issues with their cars?

Oh by the way I am a female, (probably the only one on this forum) so hope you guys dont hold this against me LOL
Any comments, thoughts would be much appreciated
Thanks for reading

the rattling is pretty common and i'm not sure of a fix short of a new exhaust, but it should be more of a quiet rattle nothing too in your face if it is then take it back.

the rest of your issues sound like poor prep from the dealer prior to delivery, the paint issue is weird as it shouldve been picked up in the factory prior to shipping, the tail light issue is pretty slack on the dealers behalf as is the water marks, emblem marks and panel in the rear door.

You need to take the car back to the dealer sadly and have them address each issue as they shouldve delivered a pristine car to you. if the paint runs as you've called them are an issue with the paint then they may need to replace the bumber as it would be easier and if I were you if it needs a respray I'd be demanding a new one not a respray on the existing bumper.

On the reliability issues, you'd be right they did have a bad rep in the past to the point where they almost went under in the US and the Mk6 GTI when introduced for the first time was introduced as the GTI for this exact issue. due to the issues they steered away from the Rabbit title it used to have to get the punters through the door. Since the build of the Golf shifted back to Germany, from South Africa, you shouldnt have too many issues, the 118TSIs are involved in a recall at the moment but that is something to do with the programming of the ECU.

anyway, welcome, enjoy the car and get involved in the community. have a look at VW Watercooled, and VWGolf.net.au as they are great Aussie communities, sadly its a little quiet in here but it has some great reads from overseas :)

just to add to that, i too am experiencing what sounds like the exhaust rattling when acclerating. the rattlling is not that loud, but enough to notice from inside the car with the windows closed. only goes for a few seconds and goes away once you let go of the pedal. ive had the car for just over a week now.

from the sounds of it, this is a pretty common issue?

Thanks guys for your replies.

regarding the exhaust rattle, no its not too loud and does go away after initial acceleration, just sounds tinny.
Yes, I agree with the poor presentation of the car and having to have the bumper resrayed does not sit well with us at all, so at present just in limbo waiting for them to get back to us with the date their paint specialist will be visiting the dealership next, have been to a panel beater friend today and he said a new factory painted bumper from Germany would be the most ideal outcome also. Hmm will they wear that one, yet to put it to them. Just as a matter of interest on that though....there were two Golf Mk 6's next to each other at the dealership...one was a GTi & the other was a 118TSi.
Both were candy white and apparently had the same colour code...well they were quiet different colours, so that now leaves us with the uncertainty of an exact colour match.
I have made it very clear to the salesman how we feel about being presented with a car that was not only damaged - (just missed seeing it beforehand, partly because the car was not ready at the appointment time which also through us out) but that the car had also gone through so called detailing and still been presented with these faults.

Another query please?
We seem to have excessive road noise.
the demo we drove had the 18" detroit rims with I believe Dunlop tires.
Our rims are 17" with Bridgestone Potenza RE050's. Asked a guy at out local Beaurepairs today and he was surprised VW were using these over the continental brand.
He said someone else had mentioned road noise with these also.

So can anyone with 17" stock standard rims let me know what tires their GTI's came out with and if they have this issue.

Yes Nath, I am very aware of the many issues with the 118TSI, last year we had signed up for one of these....until I read the car advice reviews (Golf Vi-first steer)we got out of that contract quick smart.
Not a positive start for us and until things are rectified, its an uneasy time and hard
to just enjoy the experience like we deserved and expected to. :-(

If I was you I wouldnt take anything other than a new bumber, as for the colour coding I cant really answer that.

My 17s came with the RE050s aswell and while there was road noise it wast too bad. VW use Bridgestone, Conti and Pirelli tyres on their various models it appears hit and miss with what you actually end up with from the factory. Something in support of the RE050s is that they handle in the wet better than the CS2 or CS3s. I upgraded to 18s and am now running PS3s which have a little less road noise than the RE050s.

Good luck with the dealer, hopefully they do the right thing and sort you out, if not I'd be contacting VW directly to complain as its the only way to ensure that the dealers improve their service in the end.

The more we think about it the more we are not interested in a respray
of the damaged bumper.
Will be requesting a new factory painted bumper, hmm that should be interesting, will keep you posted.
Regarding the 18" upgrades, what rims do you have now and are the PS3's
the conti's? What are they like for grip (especially in the wet?)
Can you give me an idea of the cost to upgrade to your 18's plus the new tires please Nath?

One more query.
What grade of fuel do you use?
We thought it was good that VW had changed the grade to premium unleaded 95, but when collecting the car we were advised to still use 98 octane as it would keep the motor cleaner and thats whats in it at present.
Not sure now what to put in at our first fill?

I use Premium, but the car will run fine on 95, personal choice really.

The PS3s are Michelin tyres, Pilot Sport series. At the moment they are on special for around $300ea, but you can expect to pay as much as $400+ a corner. Wet handling is exceptional as was tested recently, highly recommend them.
My wheels werent cheap, in excess of $3K imported from Germany, you can pickup some nice BBS for less, or other replicas etc for even less, all depends on your taste and end goal.

Hi,
Picking up my first VW at the end of this week. 2010 TR GTI 5 door DSG.
Coming from a modded 94 WRX wagon and a Liberty GT wagon, this will be a bit of a downsize but hopefully an upsize in fun. The WRX used to be a blast when boost kicked in but a grumpy old-f the rest of the time as 3 clutches will attest, but it was the first car to really put a smile on my face. The Liberty is a superb family wagon (3 kids, 4 if you count me) but was never going to fit 3 small kids in baby capsules and booster seats even if it did have a fab boot. So the wife drives something Found On a Rubbish Dump that handles like a hearse on prozac but could swallow a soccer pitch, and I have fallen in love with the grown up hoons hot hatch.
Is it wrong that I havent even taken delivery and already looking at bits that will make it go harder ? though my other passion of single malt whisky means that I will be torn between a bottle of something great and shaving a tenth off the Nappy Dash 500.
Cheers, Grant.
