Dead straight on the highway...
Car still rips... all lights are off the dash now...
It's ready. I'm going to put some more miles on it before driving down on Tuesday.
LTFT is down to 1.07 which is nice... it's not as bad as it was before (1.17)
I'm going to get a new air intake filter cuz the old one doesn't make a nice seal.
LTFT stuck at 1.00 (not good, it's a false reading)
The STFT ranges from 0.90 to 1.25
When I'm barely on the throttle with low load, the STFT climbs high (1.15-1.25) but when I put some load on the motor it drops to ~0.95-1.05 as it should.
I'm not sure if this is an exhaust leak issue or an intake leak issue

So since the last post, I made it down to TX just fine
The car was still having some LTFT issues, but it drove just fine and was a great daily for a while.
Until last week when at the last light before turning into my office, I gave it some beans (not all the beans) and it cut a lot of power and sounded hurt quite bad. It stalled at the light (despite being in neutral), but I managed to limp it into the office parking. Later that day, it idled and drove around ok, so I figured I'd try and limp it home and see what's wrong. Made it about 1 mile out of the office before I had to pull over into a big church parking lot because it was not going to make the trip.
At this point, I decided I would just call a tow as I didn't want whatever damage happened to keep going on. My roommate brought me some tools, including my jack, and upon lifting the car, I couldn't see any charge pipes or clear leaks. The car didn't throw a single code this whole day. The fuel level seemed to drop significantly, and in the two logs I took trying to make it home, I noticed STFT jumping all over the place, but mostly at 0.75 which is the lowest reading that means the engine was pulling back on fuel due to a rich condition. This led me to believe it was a leaky injector or even possibly the aux fuel kit being faulty.
AAA hadn't kicked in, so I figured I'd ask a passerby if they had any coverage and would be willing to call me a tow. He said his coverage expired, but was willing to help me find someone, so we walked around the church but couldn't find anyone. I was ready to bite the bullet on a $100+ tow and he ran to me from his car holding up a AAA card in the air. Turns out, he still had 2 months left until expiry, so he called me a tow and waited with me for 1hr45 til the truck came and brought me home. Super chill dude, thanks Ken.
Unfortunately, when I got home, my roommate had parked his car outside our garage, which meant I couldn't drive the car up into there, so I left the car on the street (he was busy on some facetime call BS and I couldn't get his attention to move his car). The next day, I got to work with checking the oil, which seemed higher than usual, leading me to believe that fuel had been leaking past the piston rings, down the crankcase, and into the sump. In hindsight, this could have been a false reading due to the ever so slight incline of the road. Still not sure.

I then ran a smoke test and found that there was a leak coming from the turbo outlet pipe at the connection to the turbo. This meant I would have to get under the car to fix it, which I wasn't planning on doing on the street. From Wednesday when it broke down, til Saturday evening, the car was on the street. Me and my roommate hosted a bunch of homies for poker night and they helped me push the car up the street, up the other street (big incline), and up the driveway (also big incline) to get me into the garage.
From there, I got to work the next day, first checking the oil and the plugs. Oil level seemed normal and wasn't specifically glossy or any telltale signs of fuel. I didn't take a picture sadly. There are no oil leaks on the car at the moment. Just some shiny spots around the valve cover seal and the backside of the motor, but no significant losses of oil. The coil packs were fine it seemed, just a little dirty. Cleaned them up and inspected the plugs. Each identical to the last. Perfectly normal plugs, showing no evidence of being wet from fuel or excess carbon buildup or being too clean.
Then I got underneath the car and fixed the turbo outlet pipe. It had slipped off and was only half on. Video
At this point, I was feeling quite happy because this was likely the culprit of my issue. I secured all of the clamps nice and strong and smoke tested again. No significant leaks, but there is still a small leak coming from the turbo outlet to IC hose which is secured by a stupid metal clip. Tuner said that is an issue on all mk6's... shitty design. At this point, I also installed an o2 spacer I bought from Uro. My tuner had recommended I do this for the longest time, and so I figured that while the car was in the air, I would just get this out of the way. The o2 sensor bungs on the downpipe are shitty and rusty. I got the spacer as far as I could (probably 4/5 threads) and then called it a day. So the spacer is at a relatively far position from the DP.
I then changed the oil and collected a sample to send to blackstone labs for analysis. The oil wasn't super shiny or anything. Normal oil change. Filled it back up, threw in a new oil filter and changed the cabin filter. I cleared the codes from the catless DP as well.
Fired up the car, and it held idle, but sounded off from normal. I can't tell if the sound was like that of a misfire or running on 3 cylinders, but it just wasn't right. I took a video and 2 logs of idle + partial throttle/giving it some revs and shut the car off after that. Didn't even take it for a spin.
That was yesterday, and I now I'm getting a bit tired. I'm going to send the logs to my tuner and see what's what. Been driving my other roommate's tesla for the last two days and getting rides from people. I just want my car healthy again so that I can possibly drive it up to Nashville in October (closing in fast lol).
A compression test might be up soon.

Took the car to the wash today, on the way back, it started giving me similar issues to before... rough idle, a lot of rev hang, and fuel trims jumping around. I bet it's another intake leak/vacuum leak... gonna smoke test it later today. :(

I saw a youtube comment which says "most VW/Audi machines on roads all have vacuum leaks" and then another user commented "I owned RS5 and RS7, you are right"

So ya get those leaks figured out using smoke test.

Since moving to TX, Stratified had given me a tune with a MAF calibration revision. I had tried it back in June and didn't like the throttle response (very jumpy), so I went back to the previous tune. I assume that the previous tune had been working well with a faulty PCV and a possible boost leak. Once I fixed the PCV and boost leak, the car was running like shit over the last few weeks. Very lean. STFT was at 1.25 and the lowest was at 1.20, and the car had AFRs 15 and 16+ nearly all the time. Clayton at Stratified suggested that I go back to this revised MAF calibration tune in case it helps out since the calibrations are correct for the intake. Sure enough, I flashed the tune last night and when I took it to get some gas, the AFRs were where they should be and the STFT/LTFT was the closest to 1.00 I've ever seen them. Amazing. So happy.
I drove the car to work today and took it out for lunch. No issues whatsoever. Even did a small WOT as I was approaching my house (Pro tip: Don't do this on your way away from home, always do it as you're approaching so you're closer).
Now I'm, going to see if I have any time to fix the radiator core support, throw in the new Rad from Jay (<3), do a solid coolant flush, throw on the skid plate, and put on the new bumper guides.
I have a road trip to Nashville on the 7th of Oct, so I'm not sure I'll have the time to do this before then. Ideally I do though, since the coolant reservoir has a small leak and coolant bubbles from there (it's hot a f down in TX).

Got out into the garage this evening to put in the rear seats and fix the bumper guides. Halfway into doing the bumper guides, the bulb in the garage blew. Motherfuuu.
Using the pathetic garage door opener light as well as a camping light and my handheld flashlight. SMH.

I made it to Nashville. I left at 4am, and arrived at 7pm. Fuck that shit. 880 miles total.
The car made it but was retarding timing quite a lot and fuel trims were acting up. Fuck me, I only hope that it makes it back on the return trip so I can diagnose.
Running a scan tomorrow.

Scan showed an intermittent P0341 code. That's the camshaft position sensor. P0341 comes on because oil is low and messing with VVT system, the wires or sensor isn't plugged in/working well, or your timing tensioner ain't working right and is about to bust.
Well, I heard a significantly loud tick from the passenger side, near the timing cover this morning. So not ready to deal with this right now, 900 miles away from Austin and 1100 miles away from MA. I did replace the tensioner, guides, and chain last year.
Gonna have to idle the car and check block 93 for chain stretch.
So ready to give up on this POS car. I love it to death and all of the time I've spent on it, but since I moved to Austin it's just problem after problem.

So Block 93 showed 8.93 deg of phaser correction. HAHAHAHAHA!!
Technical talk, that's far more than the degrees required for the chain to skip a tooth, which it hasn't yet because P0341 is intermittent and the car still drives ok. I haven't driven it since that morning when I got my buddy from the airport.
Shit outta luck, but since then here's what I've done. I booked an appointment with a close by shop here in Nashville that specialize in German (specifically VW/AUDI) and spoke with one of their reps who was quite familiar with the TSI timing system and common failure points, as well as things to check. So I've got confidence in the shop. I'm checking out of the airbnb as I type this, which means I had to find somewhere to stay while the car is looked at. Thankfully, some friends in Knoxville are kind enough to let me stay. I've got a ride going there later today which is nice.

As for the car, I highly suspect the VVT Camshaft Solenoid, or Cam Phaser, or whatever. The symptoms of that failure are similar to what I've experienced (Excessive Knock, messing with the chain, P0341).

We'll see... I am prepared to foot a ~2k bill if the car does need a timing service. What else can I do? I don't have the specialty tools, the space, or the time.

So the shop that the car is at, didn't have time to take a look at it today (I called them and they said it's in the queue) so I'd hope they see it tomorrow AM for some diagnostic. I'd be pissed otherwise.
With less and less runway for crashing at my friends here in Knoxville, the stress set in. The kind that pinches you in your abdomen. It grabs your spine til you can take a breath.
So what are my options?
  • Find another friend to crash at (ideally somewhere in TN, but since I'd be taking a bus somewhere, it doesn't really matter I guess)
  • Bus back to Austin (about a day's trip, leave at 6pm, get there 3pm next day)
  • Get a bnb in Nashville or Knoxville and suck up the fact that it'll cost me money (not that much, but at least 50ish a night for about a week)
The nice thing is, I can continue working remotely til then, but this shit ain't fun.

Played more disc golf today with my new friend here at the house (BF of my friend's sister). It was fun, but it just made me feel so damn lonely. I want to go home.

Shop said they'll try and get a look at the car before the weekend. Slowly losing my confidence, but I still trust them. Buddy of mine who rebuilt his GLI motor called me and confirmed my suspicions about VVT solenoid or Camshaft.

@jay745 dyk if anyone puts in higher lift camshafts in these hoes? I'd assume it would take a while to have them delivered since they might be custom order.

I'm not sure on that. It would be worth reaching out to pag parts or FFE. They pretty much have the big power motor builds on this platform locked
