Catalytic converter malfunction light on and can smell something, 2011 GTI That I just purchased does Catalytic converter,need replaceing,is it safe 2 drive

Can you tell us what code the ECU is logging? Does the car have any modifications?

Just get a tune and down pipe! Problem solved.

If you have a catalyst efficiency code then it will most likely be drivable, worst case the cat material can cause a misfire if it becomes dislodged from the pipe. Will obviously give a different fault code in that case.

Worst case is a piece of the cat breaks up and gets sucked back into the turbo.... Slim but possible.
