Chance for a MFactory Rear LSD for Golf R/A3/TT

A3-Owner

Ready to race!
I have been in touch with MFactory about bringing back the chance for a rear LSD for Gen 4 Haldex equipped VWs and Audis. This means the MK6 Golf R, the 8J Gen 2 TTS and the 8P Post Face Lift A3s.

MFactory said it would take 15-20 people committed to buying one to make it worth their time. They make front LSDs for a large number of cars and many on this forum are happy with their products.

IANA/Iabed Engineering, along with Wavetrac, tried to do this and they didn't get it done. Some of us were out time and money for that. MFactory is willing to deliver a product that their competitor was not able to.

We need enough people to go for this and make it happen. If you know someone that is interested, have them post here and hit MFactory up directly. If you are interested, do the same.

Come be part of history and enjoy the benefits of having a LSD in the rear of your AWD vehicle.

Did they give you a rough idea on the cost?

To get this done, we need to make a new ring & pinion + differential. Off the top of my head (this was from a few years ago now), I think it was around $1500.

To cut a long story short, we had already finished all the design work and was ready to proceed, but then everyone who wanted one decided to jump ship to Wavetrac as Wavetrac did not believe that we had the capability to make a new ring & pinion and everyone believed what they said about us (even though makings gears is what our company specialises in). We put a lot of time and money into this project, only to have it shoved back in our faces because of Wavetrac and the other "organiser" saying we're just cheap chinese junk.

Hence why I'm hesitant to even entertain the idea of restarting this project. If we can get the 15-20 "confirmed" (i.e 50% deposit paid) buyers, then I can restart the project. I will try to dig up the old threads and repost the details here.

There are a bunch of reviews out there of your products in other cars, and they all seem to be positive. As long as these pieces are made to the same standards, I'm excited about this. But, like anything else, it really comes down to price.

I actually read through that thread and I’m sorry that your hard work went unrewarded.

I can’t remember from that thread, but would we lose our 50% deposit if you didn’t get enough buyers?

That's the unfortunate reality of stuff like this. Everyone loves the idea, but when the bill comes nobody remembered to bring their wallet. You'll notice that the Wavetrac project never materialized, either.

Do we know if the differential is the same between Haldex IV and V? If so, it's worth crossposting to the Mk7 community, too.

The Wavetrac project never materialised because they couldn't do it (yet they still kept all the deposits that they received!). They do not have the equipment nor engineers to make their own ring & pinions. The reason why we are able to do it is because we offer the exact same thing with our BMW LSD's (i.e a new ring & pinion due to the welded ring gear on the oem diff)

And unlike them, if this project does not come to fruition, then all deposits WILL be refunded. We are taking deposits NOT because we need the money from you (unlike Wavetrac); we are taking them to ensure we get the required numbers before proceeding with production.

The only reason for a deposit NOT to be refunded is if:

1) You joined the pre-order and paid your deposit
2) The project comes to fruition (i.e we start production), but you decide you need to cancel your order

In circumstances like this, although we cannot refund your deposit, what we will do is help you transfer your deposit to another buyer (that was late to join)

Not saying you can't do it, just that it seems like these projects fall apart a lot because people don't come through with payment. It's always hard to get real actual honest to god buyers for projects like this, even though the entire forum usually goes nuts when it's announced.

I'm assuming these are going to be helical diffs?

Asking customers to pay before any r&d takes place is asinine. That's not how product sales work.

He’s right. Also, wouldn’t market research help you to determine if there is a gap your product can fill thus justifying product R&D and eventual sales?

This isn't market research for a regular production product, they were approached about a limited run for a group buy. It's perfectly reasonable to require a deposit in that situation.

Fair enough. With MFactory willing to refund the deposits should the project fall apart, I’m interested.

I agree completely with TimS. This is a custom one off order. You either want in or you don't.
