Charting O2 Sensor Voltage - Let's Beat the P0420!

Has anyone tried the spacers with the mini cats on them?

I'm CBFA and am struggling with spacer combos and CELs without a Stage II tune.

A couple people have, mixed.

I have not messed with this much, although I do have 2 42DD spacers installed I have not set the car to Stock (since I have testpipe files for my Stg 2 but the stock file does not) to test it. I just never got around to it as I had 4 years before needing a test in CA, but just moved to CO and they are going to have to test before I can register here. So going to have to figure something out.

I don't even care about making it go away for 6000 miles, that's what the testpipe file is for, I just need to force readiness with VCDS and have it make it through the test. :D

If my current combination wouldnt have worked i was going to try a catted spacer, but alas my setup worked. I had a friend with a GT35 MS3 and the catted spacer worked for him.

FWIW I think the catted o2 sensors are ~$60 each

So the catted ones didn't fly. I've been playing around with different spacer set ups and I think I've got the CEL beat. It's been off for around 300 miles and there are no pending codes.

I'll see about getting some logs on torque as well. Been error free for 2 months with no tune and a APR DW pipe and finally got the this code. Weather just went from warm to cold in the last day with a ton of rain, so not surprised right now. Cleared the code and will see what I get. Trying to hold out till spring for a tune and clutch.....

why not tackle this issue using resistors or a potentiometer and a 555 timer to trick the ECU. That way it would see a good voltage constantly. I'm new to VW's, but this is how we did it on Honda's and GM's.

I finally got back under my car this past Friday to change my O2 spacers around and noticed a ton of carbon buildup at the first clamp on my SPM downpipe, as well as around the slip clamp where the downpipe connects to the exhaust. I fixed both of these connections and re-did my spacers so that the first O2 sensor has no spacer, and the second has the Vibrant J-spacer with the medium insert. My CEL went off the next day and hasn't come back since (300 or so miles later).

-Engine: CBFA
-Downpipe manufacturer: SPM
-Catalytic converter: 200 cell, O2 ARE same distance from cat
-o2 sensor 2 (pre cat): None
-o2 sensor 3 (post cat): Vibrant J with medium jet, facing front
-Result: No CEL for 300+ miles

I wanted to post an update. After 10k+ miles and a little over 12 months, I finally threw another CEL (P0420) this past weekend. I used the Torque app to clear it and it hasn't come back.

I was able to pass emissions back in June without any issue. I'm very happy with the setup posted above.

So with GIAC, o2 readiness is ok, but CEL just gets deleted?

Found this on vortex as well.

If you're CBFA (Like me) you'll have all 3 sensors and a far more tricky car.
You'll need 2 spacers, one on #2 and #3.
A proven spacer setup that has worked for multiple people for thousands of miles etc and which I'll be using is:
Black Forest Industries spacer on spot #2 FACING engine.
Vibrant Performance J-Spacer (Part #11619, can buy on eBay)
Which has 3 inserts of different sizes for different exhaust flows.
With this in spot #3, run a spark plug non-fouler FIRST (Can buy these at pepboys, autozone etc for like $4) THEN with the SMALLEST insert in the Vibrant spacer, screwed into the non-fouler FACING the engine.

Has been proven to work for multiple people for well over 5-10k++ miles.

Just got my SPM catted downpipe today.
Will be going GIAC stage 2.
CBFA Motor.

I take it I need to at least buy 1 Vibrant/RAI J Spacer?

Yes. I'm GIAC stage 2 with a catted SPM downpipe. I just have the one J spacer with the medium jet post cat. Make sure the J spacer is facing towards the front of the car and tilted up a little bit. I've had this for over 10k now and no CEL.

Installed my SPM DP over the weekend with one vibrant spacer using Gberg2119's configuration. Got my first P0420. I'm still on GIAC stage 1, and haven't gone stage 2 yet though.
