Clutch Upgrade and Stage I

Hey guys,

I recently noticed some weird stuff happening with my clutch so I had it checked out by a transmission shop and they told me that I need a new clutch because mine is slipping.

They suggested the OEM clutch which came out to be about $1,180 and another $700 if the flywheel is bad.

My question is: What are my options as far as an aftermarket clutch and what do you suggest? I'm recently APR Stage 1 with an intake and am getting worried about having the stock clutch with the increased power.

Don't get a stock clutch as a replacement. It'll slip again, go aftermarket. Most build their own Clutch or go south bend stage 2 daily

most people go with the RSR clutch from HS tuning....it's been proven tested over and over again, even on big turbo GOLF R with NO slippege once o ever...

i have the same clutch in my car and LOVE it...pedal feel is almost stock feel and it grabs really good.

a lot of people here have decided to "build" their own RSR clutch like, and sourcing parts on the internet in order to make their own "RSR clutch"...sort of thing....i just could NOT be bothered and bought it directly from HS tuning

hope this helps

I agree that installing a replacement OEM clutch would be disappointing after it started slipping again. I ran for 2 years (stage 1+ Unitronic) on an OEM clutch before the slipping showed up and looked at both the RSR route and a South Bend SMF setup. I went with the South Bend in the end, but I imagine the RSR would have been great as well based on the reviews. The SB is a bit noisier than the OEM unit, but it runs great. While you are at it, do yourself a favor and either remove the restriction in the stock bleeder block or install an ECS bleeder block to improve clutch feel. I also changed out the OEM clutch line to a stainless steel line because, why not?

Came here to also praise the RSR, whether you take the time to research a little and assemble it yourself, or go with the HS Tuning kit. That's about the best bang for your buck you can get while upgrading the clutch for added power, and keeping OEM like drivability, if you don't want a single mass flywheel

x2! The RSR clutch is fantastic!

The transmission shop that suggested your replace your clutch with an OEM clutch after your OEM clutch slipped due to increased power is being grossly negligent, at best.

Get an RSR if you want OEM+, Southbend if you want the SMF. If you need to look up what SMF is, you probably don't want SMF.

I would agree 100% with this if the transmission shop knew that the car's torque had been significantly bumped up due to tuning which may or may not be the case. The shop that changed out my clutch was the same shop that tuned my car and they also talked to me about my future plans for upgrades, so they knew the situation with my car.

I'm looking at the SB Stage II Daily clutch. Is it like regrettably louder than the stock one?

This or the RSR seem to be the best options.

It's noticeably louder, but not intolerable. But everyone's opinions vary. I'd say Southbend or RSR/RSR equivalent depending what you want. Rsr will be more civilized and OEM feeling.

More people that replace their clutch and complain about increased NVH afterwards really need to take this to heart.
