2 stories that go along with this.

1. About a month after I got my car I pulled up behind a white wrx with temp plates. The wrx was my second choice, chose gti because it seemed more adult. Immediately the driver started checking is rear view and side mirrors to get a better look, and I was already doing the same to him. Finally we made eye contact, gave each other a thumbs up, and when the light turned green commenced to having a little fun. Not really a direct compliment, but it's nice to see an awd guy appreciate the gti.

2. I live at an apartment complex that is pretty strict on working on your cars in the parking lot, doesn't mix well with the mod bug, I also live next to the maintenance building. Well one day I hit the bullet and did some work. Not 5 minutes in a maintenance guy walks over to me, first reaction is great I just got the car on jacks for nothing. He asks what I'm doing and then commences to complimenting my car. Had a good 10 minute conversation with him and the other employees. Also, turns out I ended up needing a big ass pair of channel locks at one point to move a hose clamp. Asked the guys in maintenance, they said no problem and if I bet need to borrow anything else to just ask. Now whenever I see them around the complex I always get a nod or a wave. Especially while driving.

3 weeks ago I was out washing it and a kid (about 10 maybe) rode by on his bike and then circled back and stopped by the driveway and said "That's a nice car!"

^ I had the exact same thing happen to me.

There were only two other instances that I can remember.

1. Getting gas and a guy in a MS3 complimented me on my car and my LED tails

2. I was at a light and there was a car to the right of me. I see this guy with his windows down and he's staring down at my detroits for about 30 sec without blinking. This made me grin

It's funny to hear so many people mention others gawking at their Detroits when so many of us dislike them. I get the feeling that some of us feel compelled to mod for the sake of modding: if it has a badge, we must de-badge, if it has one type of glove box latch we want the other one, if it has one style of light we must swap it out for another style...

It's a fun game to play, especially with this car. Never realized how large the aftermarket industry was until I bought my GTI :)

Hands down, the Detroits are loved by many and the number one thing noticed by others. If nothing else, They ALWAYS "like the wheels".

I was painting my Detroits last summer and a cop driving by stopped and was like "Aww you're painting those beautiful wheels?" I showed him the two I already had done (matte black) and he said they looked good  they actually looked bad that day because I had just finished the day before, so they appeared streaky for a couple weeks until the paint fully cured.

I was at Lowe's the other night (buying the 1/4'' tubing for the doors ) and an older guy in a CSG was walking over to my car as I was walking out of the store.

We stood there and talked for about 20 minutes or so.

Turns out the guy has had one of every Generation. Said he got one as his first car and he gets a new one every few years. Only thing he's ever owned has been a GTI.

That's just plain awesome!

was too lazy to worry about painting over the VW caps. Planning on ordering the German flag wheel cap inserts from Klii when they are released, which should make them look amazing.

Have gotten a lot of looks and compliments, people asking me about it, even a cop asking about it wanting to get one himself (half a second of sweating when pulled up to the gas station wondering if I blew past him going way too fast). Also have gotten a lot more compliments from females then my previous car (which got alot of compliments from the teenage boy set), and lots of compliments on the Detroits. Including a Skinny Black Man, we talked about the GTI over the R32...

Im sorry but those look horrendous to me. Ruined the wheels. Ruined them. At least you could sell them for like $5 down the road...

I agree with you 100%.
As far as I'm concerned a big chunk of the price of my GTI is contained in those Detroits. I paid for them!
I would only change them if I tracked the car and felt the weight difference would save a couple of tenths of a second.
I notice a lot of people look at the wheels when you roll up besides them at a light.
