Best 'for the money' is assumed.:bonk:

I am not even close to comparing a $25k GTi with a $55k S4 or $120k 991 911 or whatever...
There are SEVERAL other cars I would rather drive than the GTi if my budget were different. I have my favroties at virtually every $5k/$10k threshold. I can safely apply an 'under $30k' qualifier on the statements regarding the GTI superiority in the market FOR CARS.

FOR ME RIGHT NOW (6/15/2012) in a car that needs to do all things well (a DD), this is what it would look like;

Under $20k - Impreza (light on options)
$20k-$30k - GTI/GLI
$30k-$35k - VW CC
$35k-$45k - Audi A4/Volvo S60 (tie)
$45k-$55k - Audi S4
$55k-$65k - Audi A6
$65k-$75k - Audi A7
$75k-$85k - NEW Audi S6
$85k-$100k - Jag XJ/Audi A8 (tie)
$100k+ - NEW Audi S8

Budget is the NUMBER ONE (not only) when considering a new car. That much is assumed when comparing one car to another.

Typically, a general rule of thumb in the industry is +/- 10% constitutes the price classification.

you've proven a MAJOR point about yourself in this post. You're VERY brand loyal/biased. There are MANY price ranges there that the BMW beats out Audi. Oh and since you wanna go with how many awards a car wins to make it "better." The 2012 Chrysler 300 is the "most awarded" car in its class......

Are some people here forgetting the fact that the Mustangs typically run a 5L engine where as the GTI is only a 2.0L!!! Having said that which car has the better grip around corners and won't burn a hole in your pocket on fuel!!! Yeah, fuel may be cheap but not in most corners of the world!!!

I just returned after 6 months in overseas in a country where fuel is cheap and believe me I love Mustangs but when you see a GTI lined up in traffic in your side view mirrors amongst others, IT STANDS OUT!!! Especially with the Bi Xenons. (And yes they have Mustangs, Chargers, Porsches, etc... there)

When I sat in my R-Line after 6 months it was like HEAVEN! The quality, the power, the grip and the features... Camry??? Come on, are you serious??? Look at the appearance for starters! Then let's talk about performance and handling!

I think I speak for all true Golf die hard owners... :happyanim: I rest my case!

The new Mustang will out handle the GTI around a road course, that's a FACT
It also now comes with factory HID, sure not Bi-Xenon, but it's not halogen and won't be blinding oncoming traffic like the cheap HID kits do.

I just like the best. Doesn't matter who makes it...

The ONLY BMW that currently beats a competing Audi is at the F30 328i/A4 level. The 328i is just A LOT (10-15%) more expensive when comparably equipped and is in its first year while the B8 Audi is in its 5th... And the X-Drive F30 hasn't been released yet...

All the rest of the Audis I chose beat the competing BMW's everytime (in their current iterations, not in history). I can provide all the sources if you like (and NOT just Car & Driver too);

S4 > 335i
A6 3.0T > 535
A7 3.0T > 640i GC (remains to be seen but the Bimmer is $15k more for the same thing...)
S6 > M5/E63 (and the RS6 is supposed to compete here but the S6 takes care of business AND for $20k less...)
A8 > 7-Series
S8 > Alpina B7

Every time, when compared in their current iterations...

AND
300 most awarded 'in its class'. The GTI is the most awarded, period.

And not JUST awards determine which cars are better. It is an all encompassing. EACH metric, carrying equal weight, all tallied. EVERYTHING. I research this stuff like you couldn't imagine. People have told me before that I should be a new car consultant. You give me a budget, 4 or 5 preferences, and required/desired driving conditions/style, and I will tell you which car to buy.

Okay so your S4 beats out the 335i sedan in your 45k-55k, except the S4 starts at $47,300 and the BMW 335i sedan is at $42,400, that's a $5000 difference, and puts the 2 cars in different "class/price ranges" according to your listings...

Okay so your S4 beats out the 335i sedan in your 45k-55k, except the S5 starts at $47,300 and the BMW 335i sedan is at $42,400, that's a $5000 difference, and puts the 2 cars in different "class/price ranges" according to your listings...

The S5 is a 2dr coupe and is no way in competition with a 335i Sedan

The 335i X-Drive M-Sport would be the S4 competitor from BMW and the closest thing to that in the F30 iteration FOR NOW would be a 335i Sport-Line X-Drive which would list from $46,995. Just $305 LESS than the entry price for an S4 (which has more std. equipment too...)

Of course a base level $42,xxx 335i would not have any of the sporting upgrades the $47,300 S4 does even in base form... The 3-er doesn't even have leather heated seats at any level standard so it lacks many of the luxury upgrades too.

And the $45k-$55k pricing (or any of the other ranges) wasn't in reference to base prices but actual purchase prices for equipment that I would want. Cars I would BUY in 'X' price range. Not cars that are merely priced FROM 'X' price range.

The S4 I had in mind with the $45k-$55k car choice is a Premium Plus S-Tronic w/ Sports Diff, B&O Sound, and 19's for $52,325.

A comparable 335i Sport-Line X-Drive with 19's, Cold Weather Pack, Premium Pack, Premium Sound Pack, and Sport Auto would cost $52,595.

SEE... And at these prices the S4 is the clear choice for me for a $45k-$55k (the range in which both cars THAT I WOULD BUY fit) price range.

I have done this pricing for ALL the cars I listed for my choices (and their competitors of course to allow the choice to be made)...

Carry on...

take your own advice and stop posting in my thread now, you have no useful information, you've proven that. You constantly post your OPINION and quote car mags info on stuff that has no relevance to the point of this thread. I'm gonna ask a mod to clean this thread up for me from the pointless stuff that was posted and ask you to NOT post useless shit in here.
