Loss of Power "Pops" at High RPM when WOT

Hey guys,

I posted about this before and blamed it on the software (Revo) in the title... thought i'd make a new post since it may not be software related, and post a video of the problem.

It seems to only happen when its less than 45F outside and only when I got WOT before 3k-ish rpms. If I ease into the throttle and go WOT at around 4kish it wont happen.

Listen for the "pops" at around the 5k rpm point (lost traction for a second then the pops started):

http://vid1080.photobucket.com/albums/j333/jmd1228/IMG_2696.mp4

I replaced the hose the runs from the PCV to the air intake tube as I thought it might be popping off under boost but it is not.

I dont think it is the PCV itself because when I take the oil dipstick out when the engine is running I do hear the idle change and no loud squeeling occurings. I also took the oil cap off when the engine was running and it sounded like it was going to stall out and I did feel a suction.

I have red top coil packs and they are new (same with the plugs)

I checked and tightened all connections on my air intake from the cone to the turbo. Also cleaned the MAF sensor

checked and tightened turbo outlet pipe and connections (turbo side and intercooler side)

checked and tightened throttle pipe on intercooler and throttle body side.

Checked and tighted the other hose coming from the PCV (my AWE boost tap hose).

Is there anywhere else that I should check for boost leaks?
Any recommendations?

Thanks!
-Jared

sounds like misfiring but the cel isnt flashing... honestly if its not the plugs and coils it would have to be software or fueling causing the issue I would think?

I am no expert but to make combustion we need air, fuel and spark so one of those is missing. You say the spark is there so look into fuel and air as the culprits.

Do you think maybe regapping the plugs might work? What should they be gapped at anyways for stage 2?

I also installed a new oem fuel filter about 7k miles ago. That's when I did the plugs too

this happened to me. 70k miles giac stage 1. car would fart or misfire any amount over 45% throttle anywhere inbetween 3-4k. its definitely an ingnition problem i solved it with r8 coils. good luck with fix

Did this happen only when it was cold out? When it's warm (above 50) it's fine.

These R8 red tops have like 2-3k miles on them and I just re-gapped the plugs to 0.030. The problem still persists. I could swap out the red tops with a used set I have sitting around but that set has even more miles on them.

Any chance that a low voltage battery could be the culprit? I'm thinking that's a long shot but I'm not sure

This happens to me occasionally but only when i lose traction and traction control kicks on. I just assumed it was the ECU cutting spark or something and dumping unburnt fuel into the exhaust causing the pop.

Hmm yeah, maybe. I always turn the traction control off via the button but I know that it doesn't get rid of it entirely. It's just annoying cause I can't got WOT through all gears in the cold lol

Many people including myself gap plugs to .028 if you're tuned, and it was recommended by a few tuning companies

Ok. I'll gap them to .028 then. I would have done that yesterday but I didn't have the proper tool

Appears to be a bad coilpack... which is weird (red tops). They've got less than 3k miles on them. I had a total of 8 coil packs with low miles on them. 4 on the car and 4 laying around. Found the 4 with the least amount of corrosion and installed them... did a couple pulls and no misfires. Still gonna re-gap the plugs to .028 just because but I think I found the issue.

this happens to me once in a blue moon when its cold out and I have been searching for answers on here for a while. I have Revo stage 1 as well and its the exact same thing as your video. Mine does not do it very often, maybe two or three times a month if that. It does not do it in the summer or when its warm out. I have red coil packs and iridium spark plugs. I tried putting my stock coil packs and stock spark plugs back in but that didn't solve it. This problem never happened before I got the stage 1 software installed. I get no CEL's and no soft codes when I scan with VAG.

Check to see if there's oil or corrosion on the inside of the coil pack... that's my only guess as to why it's happening. I've also heard that the coil packs will work harder if the gap is too big on the spark plugs and will shorten the life of the coil pack. Also heard that the Revo tunes are very demanding on the coil packs

Ive removed the coil packs a number of times and they are always clean as a whistle. I think its the spark plug gap but its weird this only happens in cold weather.

Yeah, I agree. Definitely weird. I thought I solved the issue by just swapping out the coilpacks to another set I had laying around but after gapping the plugs to .028 and going for another ride the misfires came back.

I was going WOT in 3rd gear and hit a bump in the process (TC deactivated via the button). I wonder if the bump had anything to do with it. I lost traction for a second because of the bump then regained traction the misfires occurred. I tried it again on a different road without a bump but it still did it, maybe I just have to turn the car off and back on? I'm not sure. It is annoying for sure though
