MK6 Golf TDI Coilover Query

Hi there,

This is my first time on this site so apologies if this question has already been asked and answered.

I bought my first car this year (2011 mk6 tdi) and I’m looking at buying some coilovers. However the ones I’m looking at come in either 50mm struts or 55mm struts. Which size do I need for my car?

Additionally, if I were to buy new top mounts, will this eliminate the need to compress my old springs when replacing them?

Cheers,
Amber

Some coilovers come with tops already installed. If yours do not come that way you do have to compress the springs to install the tops.
If you need any parts off of your old front suspension such as bump stops then you would need spring compressor to get those off as well. Best to buy new stops anyway or your coilover set may come with them.

Note - you should buy new top mounts and bearings for front and new mounts for rear.

I have been on these particular VW forums for many years, very little info regarding TDI Golf differences here. In terms of 50 or 55, best to check with dealer or join the TDI Golf forum. Or someone may chime in.

Congrats on your first car.

Thanks for your reply.

The coilovers I’m ordering don’t come with top mounts or bearings, however I’ve ordered some new ones.

Not 100% sure if the coils come with new bump stops but I’ll look into it, plus I have access to some coil clamps if necessary.

I emailed the manufacturer regarding the size of my struts, they said the 1.6 tdi uses 50mm struts and the 2.0 uses the 55mm struts.

I’ll be sure to join the tdi forum in case I have any future questions.

Once again, thank you for your reply.

There are a couple of special tools you need, are you familiar with what you need? In case you are not have a look at this.
