Another mod I wish I had done earlier. Whiteline 24mm rear sway bar! Feels awesome, really pulls the suspension package together, short test drive tonight, but the car feels planted and confident. Started out on the middle setting for stiffness, want to do an autocross soon and dial in the damping and sway bar settings a little further between sessions, now that I have the bias of the bar, I'll probably try soften the rear shocks a bit, and find a good neutral but comfortable does all setup! Then the car is getting really close to where I will finally call it done... Maybe ;)

Quick update, winter wheels and tires are back on for the season. Tuning back and forth with Stratified for the K04 has been going really well, the car is pulling hard, tunes are getting more and more consistent, responsive, and smooth. We are on our 7th revision now, Stratified found we where hitting the limits of stock fuelling system at high boost in cool weather, so they are working on finding the sweet spot, and lowering peak boost in areas to keep everything nice and safe. If I want more in the future, I could look at extra fuelling mods like a 5th injector to really take full advantage of the turbo. But for now, I am really happy with where we are ending up, and pulling back the boost in areas has actually seemed to make the torque curve flatter. The car is stupid responsive around town or on a twisty back road, it has a sharp torque punch at pretty low boost threshold, very little lag, and pulls so hard to redline on the highway, with each shift of the DSG feeling like it brings even more power. I have had the opportunity to drive some real serious cars in my work and personal life, and this little hatch is starting to really impress me. The whole package is getting really really close to the truly dialed in tuner car I am looking for!

Stop it.

Quit making me want to buy a K04.

I wont stop. You want it, trust me ;) ... That being said I never would have taken the leap if OE turbo didn't fail, blessing in disguise though, the car is an animal now!!

Love the throwback winters, classic and classy. And awesome photo!

Thanks!! They where a sick deal used a few years ago, and look great for "winter beater" wheels!!

Well, I hadn't planned on spending money on the GTI for a while, but a great deal came up locally and I couldn't refuse.

The first of those 2 pre owned parts went in tonight! I will reveal the rest of them slowly as I get the time to install them, and also have another special something coming up next week!

Tonight, a Unibrace UB, and a Stern Rear subframe brace!

I ended up just doing both braces at same time. Didn't want to lower it off jacks and let all the heat out of the shop (friends heated garage). So I can't tell if one brace is making all the difference, or if they are really both working as a package. Unibrace was easy to install, so easy, unbolt those 2 little stock cross bars, and throw the Unibrace where they where, if you can jack up your car, you can install a Unibrace. Stern rear subframe brace was much more difficult just because it really has to be hammered into the right place, its sorta press fit into the subframe, has to be aligned just perfect and leaves no play, got it done eventually! It's quite stormy here tonight, wet and cold, so I couldn't drive her hard on the way home, but still noticed it pretty immediately. Bumps feel a hair less harsh, when on uneven pavement especially. The car used to do this odd thing after the coilovers where installed, it would get really harsh/rocky if you where turning sharply over rough pavement, say mid intersection taking a left turn, very rare but it happened. It wasn't unsafe, or crazy harsh, just an odd behaviour. Seems to be almost entirely eliminated now! There are a few specific intersections I know would cause it every time, I'll have to hit em on purpose tomorrow and see if it's gone. You can also just sorta feel what's going on with the rear a bit better, hard to describe, it's subtle but there. You just get that slight bit more feedback and feeling as to what the rear end is doing. Overall it's all kinda subtle, not everyone would notice the difference but a driving enthusiast would for sure. I'd really be curious to know what it does on a more stock suspension'd car, my car is on the stiff side, I kinda feel that's why it's so noticeable the suspension was stiff, starts to expose soft chassis areas. Anyway. Long story short great upgrade, they are expensive and big item to ship to Canada so I probably never woulda bought one new. Glad I found this deal because it really ties together the suspension setup that much more, it's confidence inspiring to feel what's going on in the rear so much more, RSB was most of that but his is the icing on the cake!

Teaser of what is to come tomorrow...

Dropped the car off at local VW dealership tonight for an oil change, DSG service, and new brakes!

With so much extra go from the new turbo, we needed the braking performance to match. I have never made these brakes fade, and they have a bit of life in them, but they are whatever OEM or parts store garbage the PO put in, nothing special, and with all this power I wanted something solid in the braking department. I am planning on some autocross and track time in the car next year, I have had that boiled fluid pedal to the floor moment in the past on other cars, and I don't want to experience it again! They have also begun to be a little wobbly under hard braking, whether thats pad buildup or warping in the rotors I don't know. But it won't matter soon!

In a perfect world, I'd love to do a BBK, or something DIY with Touareg callipers, Boxster Calipers, Golf R stuff... But in reality, I have been spending far to much on this car recently! So a good solid OEM replacement will be miles ahead of what is fitted currently. I also really look forward to the clean look of the black coated rotors, should keep hubs from looking rusty and really pop when the summer wheels are back on!

• Stoptech Slotted Performance Brake Rotors
• Stoptech Street Performance Brake Pads
• Stoptech Stainless Braided Brake Lines
• Tyrolsport Brake Calliper Stiffening Kit (not pictured).
• Motul RBF 600 Fluid

Edit: (Dec 22nd 2020) - Install went well, bedded them immediately after picking up the car, overall good upgrade. I will be saving a short review and writeup for when I can get some good photos. Because I had a shop do the install on this, I don't have any good photos. I may even wait until summer wheels are back on, I will be able to get much better photos of the setup, as well as a better idea of how they will perform at the limit in good weather and grip. Luckily where I live now winters are short, stay tuned for more!

Finally got around to installing the Tyrolsport calliper stiffening kit! Easy install, pedal feels more confident, I would recommend it for the price.
I can say there is a slight increase in noise, a small squeak, on the first few stops of the morning when cold, that was not there with the rubber OEM pieces. It goes away after 4 or 5 stops, which I have to do to leave my neighbourhood, so I don't care. No noise or any other downsides that I can tell once it does that little warmup.

Put my summer wheels and tires back on, it's probably a bit early, but I don't daily the car anymore working from home.

I also modified the OEM centre caps to work with my Superspeed wheels, have wanted to do this since I got them, as I really like the clean OEM+ look of aftermarket wheels with OEM caps. Sadly, they didn't quite fit as is. I ended up breaking all the mounting tabs off of the OEM caps, then using 3M double sided body moulding tape. They are both stuck by the tape, AND sorta press fit in there with the added thickness of the tape. I had to remove one to reposition it after mounting a little sideways, and had troubles getting it out, so I have little to no worry of this tape method not working at speed, they are STURDY!

The GTI is off the road for a little bit. Saving some money on insurance since the Miata is insured and weather is perfect. Gives me a bit of time to catch up on some small GTI jobs I have wanted to do! Today, we refinished the suitcase muffler in satin black, makes it blend into the diffuser way better and removes the big metal eyesore of a muffler. Kept the OEM chrome tips, and gave them a fresh polish, turned out very clean if I do say so myself!!

I personally love the look of a good muffler peeking out at you from just below the bodywork, but painting it satin black looks surprisingly fantastic! Love that you left the tips as-is -- good contrast.
